Craftsmenship on Display in West Tisbury

Although not the last chance, it certainly is the best chance to find that certain Island treasure. This weekend the annual Labor Day Artisans Festival will take place at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury.

On Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. and running until 5 p.m., over 85 local artists will be showcasing their handmade wares. Consider it a two-day throw-down of creativity and craftmenship. There’s something for everybody, plus food from the Sweet Life Café.

The John Stobart Gallery will open its new encaustic painting exhibition, The Luminous Landscape, with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 31 North Summer street in Edgartown. The exhibit will hang until Sept. 30.

Well over 200 people attended the gallery opening of The Art of the Ceramic Bowl at Featherstone this Sunday, which kicked off with a fund-raising effort that gave new meaning to a common Vineyard abbreviation. The event, which sought to raise money for the purchase of Featherstone’s new kiln, was Buy Your Own Bowl.

Sea Art at Pep Art

Pep Art will open a new exhibition, Sea Art, this Friday, Sept. 3, featuring ocean field paintings by Clifford Smith. Other exhibiting artists include Elizabeth Cecil, Jennifer Langhammer, Suzanne Schireson, Carrie Mae Smith, Greg Watson and David Wright.

All are invited for the artists’ reception on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The Pep Art gallery is located at 7 Beach street extension (Five Corners) in Vineyard Haven. For details, call 508-693-2236.

As is the case with most Old Sculpin shows, the works on display put the spotlight on diversity, with established and emerging artists — working in various media — sharing space inside the cozy building on Dock street.

A new exhibition of paintings by Harry Seymour opens at Carol Craven Gallery with a reception for the artist on Sunday, August 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. and the public is welcome.

This will be Mr. Seymour’s second exhibition at the gallery, and he will present his most recent works of egg tempera paintings and scratchart etchings. He draws his inspiration from the beauty of the Vineyard as well as its richly diverse multicultural community.
