For those who love to eat fresh bay scallops harvested from Island ponds, they won’t be available in fish markets for long. The fishery closed yesterday.
Shellfish constables report it was a fair season, with Edgartown doing the best. More than 100 commercial bay scallopers across the Island were able to make a decent day’s pay since the season began back in the fall. Only one or two fishermen were out working the ponds in each of the towns by the season’s end, though.
Anyone affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia will be interested in a Monday video series featuring the highly regarded expert and presenter Teepa Snow. Ms. Snow is known for being funny in a very respectful way in order to humanize this debilitating disease. Friends, family members and caregivers of any age can learn from these videos how to better communicate with or relate to those suffering from dementia.
With three first place champions — Patrick Best, Tucker Cosgrove and Zach Lamie — and a host of other impressive placings, the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard Makos Swim Club made its mark with five other teams in the SEMSL Championship swim meet last weekend, competing against Marshfield, Nantucket, Sandwich, Eastham and Plymouth.
Fudging It
Murdick’s Fudge is again sponsoring the Run the Chop Challenge, a five-mile road race benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard. The race is on July 4, starting at the Tisbury School on Spring street in Vineyard Haven at 8:30 a.m.
Special for the Girls
The Alexandra M. Gagnon Do It For Yourself day for seventh grade girls is Sunday, March 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Vineyard Tennis Center, Workout and Spa.
This is a free event aimed at helping girls find relaxing and healthy ways to be happy. Participants can participate in cardio workouts, cooking, skin care, massage and more. Wear sneakers and comfortable clothes.
