A 10-year-old won this year’s annual fluke fishing contest, held last weekend. Nathaniel Packer, of Tisbury, caught a 10.1-pound fluke which more than eclipsed anything caught by the 139 other participants in this year’s contest. Youth, persistence and luck overshadowed age and experience when it came to the grand prize.

Virginia Elizabeth Vogt has joined Bouclé Salon & Spa of Edgartown. Certified in oncology aesthetics, eyelash extensions and peels, the Vineyard Haven-based aesthetician brings to Bouclé service for individuals with cancer, or recovering from cancer.

Her certification from Touch for Cancer prepares professional aestheticians to provide safe, personalized spa treatments to people with health-challenged skin.

Learning how to tie a knot is part of learning the ABCs of seamanship, and at Sail Martha’s Vineyard you are never too old to learn.

What began as one volunteer and a handful of boats has grown into a thriving organization of 14 experienced instructors and 72 boats, year-round programs for children and adults and a summer camp dedicated to teaching Island children to sail at affordable rates.

The 20-year old organization has taken its mission far beyond what the founders could have imagined.

Swim for Jesse

Swim for Jesse, an open-water swim race, will take place tomorrow at Joseph Sylvia State Beach, next to the big bridge. Registration for the event begins at 7:30 a.m., with races beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The event is organized by Rebekah Nivala, a student at Wheaton College, and sister Kaija, a regional high school student. Through the fundraiser, the two hope to raise awareness for eosinophilic disease, a chronic digestive system disorder.

Hundreds of boats ranging in size from eight-foot long Optimist sailing dinghies to 30-foot Shields will fill the Edgartown harbor this weekend as the 88th annual Edgartown Yacht Club Regatta gets under way.

Racing begins Thursday; boats begin arriving in Edgartown harbor on Wednesday afternoon.

More than a dozen Wianno Senior 25-foot gaff-rigged sailboats will arrive Thursday afternoon from the Cape. They race from Osterville to here.

Little League at Bat

The Martha’s Vineyard Little League under-nine travel team opens their season today, July 8, against Taunton West in the Rehobeth Summer Slam Tournament.

The 10-year-olds travel to the Cape on Friday to face Walpole in the Sandwich Summer Blast, after going 1-2 in the 10-year-old state Little League tournament.

The 11-year-olds won against Brookfield at Veira Park on Wednesday, July 6. Today they play Rochester as they advance through the 11-year-old state Little League tournament.
