As if to keep the Indian Summer going just a little while longer, we're indulging our obsession with screened porches in this Fall Home & Garden issue of the Vine. We stumbled on a beautiful detached porch this summer that gracefully solves the old problem of how to add on a porch without blocking lightflow to the house. Joann Frechette and Bob Nash's porch lies just far enough away to be separate, and yet it is connected by a pergola and deck that make it feel accessible. It doubles as a living and dining space, and has turned out to be a much loved (and used) space. We thought it might offer inspiration for your own project—dream this winter, build in the spring.

We also asked Brad Woodger to write about the nostalgia some of us (okay, of a certain age) feel about childhood days—and nights—spent on the porch. The Beautiful In Betweens is a lovely read, regardless of how much porch time you've got under your belt.

By chance, we're also featuring three men in this issue who personify the Islander who does more than one thing well. In fact, we're introducing a semi-regular feature called "The Double Life," because so many Islanders have this affliction. Brian Athearn, techie and farmer, kicks off the series in this issue. We also interview Brian Nelson, a green technology engineer as well as a musician. And, in keeping with our home theme, we feature one of the Island's finest craftsmen, cabinetmaker John Thayer (who also has a boatbuilding background).

No shortage of inspiration on this Island.
