The Mike Benjamin Band kicked off the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association sunset concert series Friday evening, before a mellow crowd on the lawn outside the Tabernacle. The sunset was hidden under a layer of gray skies, but the musical vibe offset any concern over impending thunderstorms. Some brought picnic feasts, others grabbed cheeseburger and lobster sliders, prepared by sponsor Offshore Ale from a new mobile grill.
Mr. Benjamin and friends stepped through a set of rock and folk-rock standards, finishing with a cover of the Paul Simon tune Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, featuring an amped up horn section.
The summer series continues every Friday evening through August 12.
