It does not take the autumn equinox to tell us why the the first swamp maples and elms are turning in Island woodlands. That scent in the evening air comes from the first flicker of fire at hearthside. Last night's full harvest moon was enough to confirm summer's dying hours. Now the Island looks forward to the golden weeks of September and October, to the anticipation of Indian summer.
Everywhere on the Island the welcome to autumn signs are out and if there is any doubt, you may look to the striped bass and bluefish derby for confirmation, also to the open parking spaces along the main streets of our villages.
