Just when you think the pace of Vineyard summer has reached its peak, the season reaches back, shifts and accelerates into a kind of overdrive. We call it August.

According to one theory that has a certain compelling simplicity, it's all a matter of the heat: Just as water boils at higher temperatures, perhaps time itself starts to percolate in a new way as the Island's warmest month arrives.
