Our first heat wave of the summer settled over Island flower and vegetable gardens like a suffocating blanket and suddenly even blooming was an effort. Red and white impatiens keeled over along white picket fences, and rose of Sharon, which has just begun to flower, folded in against itself, a natural defensive measure. Islanders wilted, too, and sought refuge beneath umbrellas at the beach, where the deliciously cool ocean water beckoned.
