Light flurries began falling, almost on cue, at the start of the Christmas parade in Edgartown on Saturday. But clear skies prevailed as the flashing blue lights of an Edgartown police car signaled the commencement of the annual event.

The parade saw a strong turnout as crowds lined the sidewalks of Main street. Spectators both young and old donned Santa hats and reindeer antlers reaching out their hands to catch candy, and even a few stuffed animals, being tossed out by passing floats.

“Thank you for your service,” someone said as a member of the Coast Guard handed out candy from his float.

Dressed as Queen Elsa from the movie Frozen, Rachel Keogh placed sparkly crowns on the heads of ecstatic young girls as Frozen’s theme song “Let It Go” played in the background.

The Farm Institute’s float brought the farm to the streets with staff holding several chickens alongside a pen of sheep and goats. Hercules the ox brought up the rear.

Members of the Boys and Girls Club shot basketballs into a hoop as it moved slowly down Main, while the Grinch tossed out bright colored taffy from Murdick’s Fudge. An elf on a skateboard cruised alongside Scrooge while the RISE dance troupe giddy-upped and picked up their feet to the tune of Jingle Bell Rock, and children rushed towards Frosty the Snowman as he made his way along the parade route.

And then at last the man with the bag, Santa Claus, made his long-awaited appearance greeted by cheers, waves and smiles.

Christmas in Edgartown festivities continue throughout the weekend.
