December was so mild that some spent Christmas Day at the beach. But winter weather arrived with the start of the new year, and on Jan. 5 Vineyarders woke up to a cold white world. The first snowflakes fell on Monday as Christmas decorations were being taken down in Edgartown. The snow came back along with freezing temperatures and wind gusts during the night, and by Tuesday morning the snow fell quietly, blanketing the Island and making it feel like winter at last.
