Mikado Asian Bistro in Vineyard Haven will reopen Friday at 5 p.m. after being shut down by the Tisbury board of health Monday for failing a health inspection.
Drew Belsky, health agent for Tisbury, told the Gazette that the Main street Asian fusion restaurant was deemed fit to reopen by two inspectors who visited the establishment around 11 a.m. Friday.
“[Mikado] had all documents in order, including all required food handling certifications, and [agents] found that the building was clean to their [satisfaction], so they are allowing them to open tonight,” he said.
The health department closed the restaurant on Monday after finding that restaurant workers left rice and soup out overnight before serving them the next day and were storing out-of-date seafood in the refrigerator, according to an inspection report. The department also found that surfaces and some equipment were not properly cleaned and kitchen plumbing was in disrepair.
Mikado owner Kevin Yu confirmed to the Gazette that the restaurant received the health department’s permission to reopen at 5 p.m. because it properly addressed its health code violations.
“We resolved everything they asked us to resolve, but we do have to take more attention to the cleaning,” he said.
The restaurant will no longer store rice in a warmer overnight and will instead dump it out before closing, Mr. Yu said. He maintained that Mikado does not serve soup kept out overnight to customers and that the soup the health department found wasn’t being served.
Additionally, workers now have ServSafe certificates, and the restaurant has created a nightly closing checklist for cleaning and food safety.
“Moving forward, we’ll be more careful,” Mr. Yu said.
Mr. Belsky told the Gazette Wednesday that the board visited Mikado three times between Friday and Monday before concluding that the restaurant was unfit to continue operating.
After Monday’s closure, he said the restaurant seems “serious” about maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards.
“They’ll be on a more regimented inspection schedule,” he said.
