What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by rolling up your sleeves and helping Felix Neck get ready for spring? Saturday, April 25 is Mass Audubon’s Statewide Volunteer Day, and Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary needs volunteers of all ages to help from 9 a.m. to noon. After working up an appetite, volunteers will be treated to a barbecue lunch.

This isn’t a flashback to 1775, although I am writing on the historic Patriots Day holiday. And, no, you don’t have to hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. I will save you from that poetic prose, but will tell you of the Redcoats that have invaded the woodlands.

The Island’s big fishing event for youngsters, the Martha’s Vineyard Trout Tournament, is into its 35th year. Each year hundreds of our young Island fisherman vie for the many prizes and gifts that are made available to the winners of the various fishing categories. This year, it’s May 9, and as always it’s at Duarte’s Pond.

The last Island Plan forum on a specific topic will examine the challenges the Vineyard society faces today.

The social environment forum will be held on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Tisbury Senior Center. The forum is free and open to the public.

A panel will include Laurie Halt, assistant superintendent, Martha’s Vineyard public schools; Francine Kelly, executive director, Featherstone Center for the Arts; Sarah Kuh program director, Vineyard Health Care Access; and Linda Sibley, Island Plan steering committee.
