New on the VCS Board

The Vineyard Conservation Society, at its annual meeting on June 29, voted to approve the nomination of four new directors: former Martha’s Vineyard Commissioner Mimi Davisson; Richard Toole, who currently serves on the Oak Bluffs conservation commission and the zoning board of appeals; marketing and nonprofit management consultant Alan Ganapol; and Julie Anne McNary, professional fundraiser.

A thin crescent moon appears close to the red planet Mars tomorrow morning. Look east more than an hour before sunrise. The two celestial objects are in the zodiacal constellation Taurus. Mars is just to the west of the Moon and looks a dull red. Beneath the Moon and a short distance away you’ll find the bright planet Venus. The Moon and Venus will be closer together on Sunday morning.

The boys are back in town, or are they the girls? A much awaited event for bird watchers has begun. The shorebirds have started migrating from their nesting sites in the tundra. On Friday, July 10, a group of birders were scoping the sand flats of Chilmark and Tisbury Great Ponds and were delighted to see a good selection of shorebirds.
