Turkey and black vultures have been reported recently in Vineyard Haven. Rob and Wendy Culbert suggest that there is a winter roost of vultures somewhere in Vineyard Haven. I suggest it might be in the area between the Tisbury town hall and the Old Stone (Sovereign) Bank.

You would never think that Jan Riley was trigger-happy.

She is a gentlewoman to the core, no Annie Oakley here. It was not a gun that gave her the itchy finger, nor the brief but insistent call of hunting season.

Most Massachusetts saltwater recreational fishermen will be required to purchase a $10 license if they plan on putting a hook in the water next year.

There are exceptions. Fishermen who are younger than 16 or disabled are exempt, for instance, as are fishermen on a state permitted charter fishing boat.

The new license is going to have the biggest impact on charter fishing captains. While their patrons aren’t going to be required to have the license to go out on a boat and fish, some captains will be required to pay a hefty fee above last year.

The push for renewable energy has local officials pursuing solar power in Edgartown, wind in Aquinnah, even tidal power in the Muskeget Channel. Why not hydropower from Canada as well?

That’s the question Cong. William Delahunt has asked over the past few months as he has worked on behalf of the Cape and Islands to secure a partnership with the Canadian government to bring hydroelectricity from the far north to the 10th district.

In August Mr. Delahunt met with Quebec Premier Jean Charest to discuss the prospect of such a partnership.
