Sundews prove that the adage, “You are what you eat,” doesn’t always apply.

These plants do the unexpected: They eat animals. No vegetarianism here, and photosynthesis only goes so far with them. Sundews are carnivorous plants and will devour insects for sustenance and survival.

State health officials will today conduct an inspection of the Aquinnah laboratory whose fluctuating test results have led to a series of recent beach closures on Martha’s Vineyard.

Late yesterday a spokeswoman for the state Department of Public Health, Jennifer Manley, confirmed the audit of the Wampanoag tribe lab, but said it was routine and not related to recent results of water sampling.

Anna Edey stooped over one of her many wineberry bushes at her West Tisbury home Saturday afternoon, plucked one of the raspberry-like wild berries and popped it into her mouth.

“What a treat,” she said. “They have no shelf life, so you have to pick them right off the bush.”
