In a reversal this week, Vineyard fishermen dropped their lawsuit over the Cape Wind project, with Cape Wind in turn agreeing to support access and a new permit program for fishermen who make a living in the waters around Horseshoe Shoal.
At a conference call with members of the Island and regional media Tuesday, Cape Wind communications director Mark Rodgers and Warren Doty, president of the Martha’s Vineyard/Dukes County Fishermen’s Association, announced that the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court two years ago, would be dropped.
The historic Mill Pond Dam in West Tisbury will undergo a comprehensive study this summer due to a state requirement that the dam to be reviewed every five years.
At their weekly meeting on Wednesday, West Tisbury selectmen authorized spending $1,000 on the study. The money is largely for administrative fees associated with filing the report to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. Town dam inspector and civil engineer Kent Healy will perform the inspection with help from surveyor Bill Austin.

When the former Massachusetts State Lobster Hatchery in Oak Bluffs was renamed the John T. Hughes Hatchery and Research Center this spring, it also got a change in purpose. The benefits of that shift are already being released in local coastal ponds.
Through the efforts of a crew from the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group, the hatchery has worked as a nursery for the raising of millions of tiny baby quahaugs. Rick Karney, director of the group, said that he and his staff have been turning over the quahaugs to local shellfish constables.
Friday, June 22: Hot and steamy. Temperature rises to the 90s in the shade. Partly sunny. Two fast 52-foot high tech sailboats are tied up at the Edgartown Yacht Club clubhouse. Pennants overhead roll in a steady light breeze. Sailing in the afternoon light steady breeze. Pretty evening sunset, with crimson clouds hugging the horizon well into the early evening.
