The ukulele (“jumping flea” in Hawaiian) is a small friendly guitar-like instrument derived from a similar instrument brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in the 19th century.

Talented folks at the Federated Church on South Summer street in Edgartown are ready to entertain on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they present their All Church Cabaret.

As Aboveground Records prepares to close its doors on Saturday, owner Mike Barnes declares that this week is all about hanging out. “This week isn’t about commerce, it’s about friendship," he said on Sunday afternoon.

On Friday night Mocha Mott's in Vineyard Haven began hosting what is to be an ongoing series of musical coffeehouse events. “Long live Mocha Mott’s music!” Adam Lipsky said after playing his first set of jazz. “I hope this continues for years.”

It was mid-fall and local musician Adam Lipsky was feeling kind of blue. He looked around the Island and thought the possible venues for playing and listening to music felt static.

The 13th annual Winter Concert: Songs of Peace, Hope and Light with the Martha’s Vineyard Charter School community chorus is at 5 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Sunday, Dec. 22.
