Food Forum Is a Meal for the Mind

Thought leaders in the dynamic world of food journalism will discuss the evolution of their profession next Wednesday at a lunchtime forum called The Changing Story of American Home Cooking.

 

 

 

Boston winemaker turned Burgundy prodigy Alex Gambal will make his debut on Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday, May 13, at the Sweet Life Café before heading to the Nantucket Wine Festival for his already sold-out tasting event the following night.

The evening is a benefit wine dinner for the artists-in-the-schools program at The Yard, which brings extraordinary performers now to every Island school for special student workshops.

The first spring community Island Grown Schools meeting will be on Tuesday March 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Island Co-Housing Common House in West Tisbury. The meeting will focus on plans for school gardens this spring and summer, and on new opportunities for collaboration between Island farms, schools, and new sources of wind energy.

Sheila Bracy, Executive Director of Women Empowered, stumbled on a unique idea for her March 8 fundraiser. “Zephrus is offering a wonderful opportunity for Women Empowered to celebrate International Women’s Day with its supporters and to raise money for our program.” Dinner this Sunday is open to the public, and 20 per cent of the proceeds go to Women Empowered.

Making Time With Your Crockpot

It’s tough to turn out a slow-cooked meal if you work full-time. Lunch breaks involve mad dashes home to sear the pot roast before settling it into the oven for a four-hour braise. Stews are nearly impossible, requiring a stirring every half hour or so. It would be asking too much of your neighbor to take a turn with the spoon. What are time-challenged home cooks to do? Consider the crockpot.

Slow Food at Détente

Slow Food Martha’s Vineyard is collaborating with Détente Restaurant in Edgartown. Once a month,Détente will host a dinner salon with Island foods and discussions. Each salon will feature a guest speaker to stir discussion, plus five courses with local ingredients.
