A committee is preparing for a new phase in the mission to protect and in some cases restore the rural character of Island roads. Planners from McCormick Taylor, a consulting and engineering firm, and Lardner/Klein Landscape Architects, will help develop a manual.

Beatrice (Beach) Bennett died early this fall after a long battle with cancer. Her daughter Bella began a scholarship fund, the Beatrice Bennett Great Aspirations Memorial Scholarship, in her memory.

The basement hall at St. Augustine's might well be Santa’s workshop this week, except that Santa is in this case a group of dedicated volunteers with one goal: provide children in need with gifts for Christmas. This year, more than 300 children will receive gifts through the Red Stocking Fund.

Last Saturday at the Vineyard Haven library, Alan Burt talked about working with the homeless population of Cape Cod for the past 20 years. On Dec. 13, he will spend the night sleeping outdoors with other advocates, in solidarity with the homeless, something he’s done for many years.

John Early has contributed so many years of public service it's difficult to come up with an actual number without a high powered calculator. Hospice of Martha's Vineyard did the math, though, and chose Mr. Early to be this year's recipient of their Spirit of the Vineyard award.
