Last year Good Shepherd Parish in Oak Bluffs was faced with a problem. Father Messias Albuquerque was leaving, and due to a priest shortage in Brazil finding a replacement who could say mass in Portuguese would be difficult. Recruiting someone to say the Saturday mass was a familiar issue. Over the years a series of clergymen have filled this role.

The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program celebrated the completion of its 14th year of teaching English to adult immigrants with a ceremony at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s Performing Arts Center in early April..

The student body hailed from 14 different countries: Thailand, Korea, Russia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Columbia, Honduras, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Spain, and Romania. The joy-filled evening included song, poetry, speeches and delicious food, all student-produced.

Admission is free to the live and silent auctions held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 31, at the Agricultural Hall, Panhandle Road, West Tisbury, but bring your pocketbook anyway because auction proceeds benefit the recreation department at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oak Bluffs.

The South Shore Community Action Council has announced that the Fuel Assistance Program will close for applications for this season on Tuesday, April 30. The last day for deliveries is also Tuesday, April 30. Anyone with a utility shutoff notice is urged to contact the office by April 30. Anyone who did not receive an application in the mail and feels that they may qualify is encouraged to apply.
