Man Shot in Hunting Incident

A man was brought to the hospital Friday afternoon after he was shot in the abdomen while hunting, according to Edgartown police.

A man was brought to the hospital Friday afternoon after he was shot in the abdomen while hunting, according to Edgartown police.

Emergency responders were called to the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest shortly after 4 p.m., in an area along Barnes Road just off the runway at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport, said Edgartown police Lieut. Michael Snowden.

The man, who was not identified by police, was hunting with about 10 other people in the forest and a preliminary investigation suggested he was accidentally shot by another member of his party, according to Lieut. Snowden.

Edgartown police were working with Massachusetts Environmental Police Friday evening to investigate the shooting. Environmental police said the man was later flown to a mainland hospital for treatment and was in stable condition Saturday.

Environmental police declined to give further details as the investigation is ongoing.

The man did not have Island ties, according to Lieut. Snowden.

The shooting took place on the second to last day of the two-week shotgun hunting season for deer.

Here's the thing about the whole hunting plan to reduce ticks: very few people actually want to do it because it's gruesome and dangerous. I hope the man is okay.

The statistics do not support your fears.

The following are the number of injuries per 100,000 participants for popular sporting activities in the US in 2018:

Football: 4,013
Basketball: 1,749
Skateboarding: 1,506
Soccer: 1,443
Bicycle riding: 1,120
Hunting: 27

Hunting on the vineyard would be more successful if land bank held a lottery for mainlanders who enjoy the recreation (kinda like Block and Nantucket do). Letting avid hunters into Jacky O’s property alone would make a meaningful contribution.

Why bring big gangs of off Islander hunters over here? There would be more hunters shot than deer.Islanders can get permission from land owners to hunt. This whole thing is getting out of hand, and won’t stop the ticks.Their here to stay, and moving north to Alaska, with global warming.More efforts should be looked into for getting rid of the ticks themselves, but with the safety of life here as a priority,if that is at all possible.Maybe bait traps that attract ticks in large numbers, placed in the woods, with proper warning signs to humans.Ticks crawl in eat the bate, replenish once a month or so.

Killing deer won’t get rid of ticks, there are other animals from dogs to cows, sheep, goats, equines,as as well as even more humans who will be fed on.Then in 40 yrs the Rod and Gun will be importing more deer for the hunters.Like the way of the Wolf, and other animals man has killed off for his unfounded fears. Then to try to bring them back when it’ts too late.

Why is neither the victim nor the apparent shooter(s) identified by the police? Shouldn't that be a matter of public record?
