Family Planning Changes Name, Maintains Mission

Friends of Family Planning, the funding arm behind Health Imperatives clinic in Vineyard Haven, is changing its name to better reflect its goals.

Friends of Family Planning, the funding arm behind Health Imperatives clinic in Vineyard Haven, is changing its name to better reflect its goals.

Terre Young, the board president, said that the new name, Martha’s Vineyard Sexual Wellness (MV SWELL), is more accurate because the care the organizion provides goes beyond family planning.

“There’s way more to sexual health and reproductive care than family planning. That was really the driving force for us,” she said. “That’s our goal, sexual wellness for anybody and everyone in our community, the teenagers on through the elders....It’s way more than planning to have or not have a baby.”

Since the organization’s founding in 1985, the group has also assisted in other health related efforts, according to Ms. Young. She said that they have provided menstrual products to a number of organizations across the Island. They also reimburse patients who have received abortion care and vasectomy procedures. It also supports doula trainings.

Ms. Young said the group hopes to help support health curriculums across the Island in the future.

“We’re not moving away from our founders vision, but we’re building on it,” Ms. Young said.

Later this month at Stillpoint, Martha’s Vineyard Sexual Wellness will host a panel discussion about maternal health and abortion access. The talk will feature health experts, including the wellness program coordinator at the Wampanoag tribal clinic, Nyssa Duarte, RN, and Maureen Paul, MD, the medical director of the Massachusetts Medication Abortion Access Project.

Ms. Young said the talk will offer a chance for the community to learn about the shifting legal landscape of abortion access and how this impacts maternal health as a whole.

“We can’t talk only abortion, as important as it is, as threatened as it is. What about maternal health? There’s now a new raised number of incidents as a result of these abortion bans,” she said.

The event at Stillpoint takes place on July 27, beginning at 10 a.m.
