Parking stickers at Lambert's Cove Beach are now required starting at 7 a.m.
West Tisbury has extended the hours that a resident beach sticker is needed at Lambert’s Cove Beach this summer in order to deal with growing congestion in the area, town officials said.
This year, parking stickers are required three hours earlier than previous years. Starting at 7 a.m., only West Tisbury residents and property owners with beach stickers are allowed on the beach. Previously, stickers were not required until 10 a.m.
The change was prompted by the large number of vehicles in the beach parking lot and the surrounding area, according to the town's parks and recreation summer supervisor Randy Fauteux.
“When you have 60 cars out there at 7:15 in the morning, it’s more than just dogs and parking [that is affected],” he said. “It’s also the road. You have other people complaining, the lumber yard, people going to work. It’s chaos.”
Mr. Fauteux added that the issue has been ongoing for years.
“[The old hours] also invited people not having dogs on the leash, people doing things that they shouldn’t be doing,” he said. “It just became too much, and now that we’ve changed it.”
Lambert’s Cove is popular with dog owners because dogs are allowed on the beach until 10 a.m. That rule is still enacted, though out-of-town owners are not allowed after 7 a.m.
Beach stickers also rose in price this year. A car sticker is now $75, up from $50, and a walk-on pass now costs $15, a $5 increase from previous years.
This is the first time the price has been changed in over 20 years, according to parks and recreation administrator Peggy Stone.
The reason for the change is increasing town costs.
“It had been recommended by the finance committee several times for us to increase our prices and the committee felt we didn’t need to and wanted to just keep things status quo for our residents, but over time, [it was] what was needed,” Ms. Stone said.
Though the money doesn’t go directly back to the committee’s own budget, it helps the town, and therefore the committee, addressing various needs.
“We have a lot of big money items being done with Park and Rec, with our building maintenance, improving the trail, our fields, our town grounds, the ball fields, the tennis courts,” Ms. Stone said. “We’re doing a lot of improvements overall for our properties, and it’s just one way to increase revenue.”

When will Edgartown start
Thomas EdgartownWhen will Edgartown start restricting Tisbury and Chilmark residents from our Beaches. Whats fair is fair. They wont let us on their beaches....
Edgartown should start
Mitch ChilmarkEdgartown should start restricting access when South Beach starts experiencing the same level of congestion as Lamberts Cove and Lucy Vincent. There is a reason this is happening. There is limited parking on these beaches and there are a lot more people during the summer than there have ever been before. You're very welcome to stop by in the off-season. It's actually nicer then.
How rich. Stop by in the off
Nick Dean Oak BluffsHow rich. Stop by in the off season....they claim "parking" prohibits people but don't allow walk ons....
Even if parking is restricted
Nancy VHEven if parking is restricted to town residents, they should allow all walk ons who bike or walk to the beach.
And beautiful oak bluffs
Lynn vera Oak bluffsAnd beautiful oak bluffs beaches are open, unrestricted, while we have to hope for a land bank or trustees spot to go up island. Unfair

On Nantucket all beaches are public.
All of Nantucket is one town.

This shows the need for more
Jen ChilmarkThis shows the need for more public beaches up island. Hopefully the towns can step up and purchase more waterfront property and make it available for all (not just residents). We also need more dog friendly beaches.
Ive been coming to Martha’s
Susan Gersh EsgartownIve been coming to Martha’s Vineyard for over 30 years. My morning ritual involved a black dog coffee and muffin and a dog treat and walking my dogs on Lamberts cove from 7 to 9 every morning
Have made lots of friends and Dog friends over the years. It was a very sweet time. People were friendly and dogs were welcome. Seems like the vineyard has become so territorial, exclusive, and dog unfriendly. Black dog should probably change their logo to life ON the leash. Would love a place where people could be welcoming to other humans and dogs. They will always be some bad apples but they shouldn’t ruin it for the rest of us ?
Vineyard Haven has postage
Kristina Vineyard HavenVineyard Haven has postage stamp beaches LITTLE Owen, Owen and Tashmoo. Very sweet but tiny, rocky, and heavily used by everyone on island, boaters and visitors. Vast expanses of West Chop are not available to the people who live in Tisbury. Hardly ever see people on these locked West Chop beaches. Denying access of beaches (some of the most picturesque and enjoyable) to full time, tax paying island residents is a strange custom. The beaches are beautiful off season but it’s nice to swim during the summer not in late Fall when they are finally open to all.
The traffic in Edgartown in
Sara Piazza EdgartownThe traffic in Edgartown in the summer is largely Beach traffic, I am pretty sure. I wonder what would happen if South Beach and State Beach were only open to Edgartown residents. I'm not saying to do it, I'm just speculating.
