Sari Lipkin died peacefully at her home in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 22. She was 97.

Sari opened and ran The Gift Shop on Main Street in Edgartown in 1974 and later owned Caravel in Nevin Square.

She was a Holocaust survivor, a wife, mother and a proud small business owner, who began her life in Edgartown as a summer resident in th 1960’s when she vacationed here with my father.

She was a passionate bridge player who started a beginner bridge class at the senior center, transforming many aspiring beginners into seasoned players.

Then Vineyard was her favorite place, and her friends, home and community gave her tremendous joy and meaning.

Sari was introduced to me about 15 years ago through the stories Lisa told. As she often was the main character. And was glad to have finally met her in her Brooklyn apartment and also see her on Martha’s Vineyard in the stories friends shared about her.

Dear Lisa and Mike, your mother will be missed. But keep on telling the stories. She has lived a fulfilled life.
