“AIN’T I A WOMAN”
Yelled Sojourner Truth
Heard and felt deeply
Among abolitionists
And suffragettes too
In their seminal struggle
To a vote long overdue
Linked to an inequality
For centuries they feud
Until an anguished cry
“ME TOO!”
Comes full circle to
Control of one’s body
Is not for others to do
Often with impunity
Sanctioned by laws
Born of a misogyny
Soon possibly history
In a perfect political storm
Where gender and race
Unify a powerful voting block
Woman poised to elect
A president who shatters
The hardest ceiling of all
No longer made of glass
Through which little girls
Could never see beyond
The cries of the past
But now they strut
To a new clarion call
“WE’RE NOT GOING BACK.”

Such a beautiful poem, Harry
Paddy Moore West TisburySuch a beautiful poem, Harry -- so important, whether we're ninety or nine, mother or father, or still to be born. Thank you for reminding me -- tonight, before the results are in -- that these roots have been planted, and we'll nourish them one way or another. Indeed, we're not going back!
