Bob Tankard Wins Art Buchwald Award

Bob Tankard will receive the award at Martha's Vineyard Community Services’ 46th annual Possible Dreams Auction on July 21.

Bob Tankard will receive the Art Buchwald Award for Outstanding Community Service at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services’ 46th annual Possible Dreams Auction on July 21.

The award, named after the former Washington Post journalist and longtime host of Possible Dreams, honors those who have proved a longtime commitment to helping the Island community.

“[Mr. Tankard’s] generous spirit is quite known to Islanders,” said Beth Folcarelli, CEO of Community Services. “He’s extraordinarily kind and looks out for his neighbors.”

Mr. Tankard moved to the Vineyard when he was 15 years old and graduated from the regional high school in 1964. He served in Korea during the Vietnam War and has been working for the past five years as the veterans outreach coordinator for Community Services. He has spent his career on the Island as an educator, teaching physical education and eventually becoming principal of the West Tisbury School. He was also the coach the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team in the 1980s and chaired the Cape Cod Collaborative, a committee that provides education resources for students on Cape Cod and the Islands.

“It is no surprise how beloved he is to those who have had the pleasure to join Bob in service, whether in the classroom, on the football field, at the Board table, or in a group counseling session,” Ms. Folcarelli wrote in a press release.

The award was decided by a committee of 12, composed of members of the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services board of directors, other staff and community members.

“When [Mr. Tankard] was entered into the committee process, there was zero hesitancy,” Ms. Folcarelli said.

Comedian and Late Night host Seth Meyers will once again host Possible Dreams at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort.

Coach T was always one of my heroes growing up and someone who constantly exuded decency and goodness to all of those around him. He somehow never aged in a world that sometimes can erode even the strongest of souls.
What a great tribute to a truly wonderful individual and advocate for kindness and empathy for everyone on life’s journey.

I will tag on here too, Coach!
When you hugged me yesterday after a couple years of not seeing one another, I felt like I had just won an award. Congratulations!

My elementary school gym teacher for a couple of years, my high school football coach and a lifelong good guy and friend...whole family was a great addition to MV back in the late 60's. Congrats "Coach T".

They left out of your resume how you were responsible for getting the baseball Sharks up and running. In four years installed the 300 seats from Baltimore Orioles Camden Yards and getting the stadium lights installed. The same year the Sharks won the league and their first championship, not losing a game in the playoffs nor the championship round in year 3. Missed out in year 4 by one game in the Championship series.
A great individual who always gives up his team me. Lucky to know him.

Coach T and Donna were my youth group leaders from about 7th or 8th grade. He lead the most amazing Bible studies during that time. Leading many to a relationship with Christ. For my 15th birthday my request was to be baptized at State Beach. Smack dab in the middle of May coach wore fisherman’s weighters in the water so he could baptize me. He is awesome, he knows we all make mistakes but he has an amazing heart of forgiveness and sheds Christ’s Love to all.
Congratulations Coach T! I’m so excited for you!!
Be Blessed!!

Congratulations, Dr. Bob! I've now been coming to the Vineyard for more than 50 years so certainly have known of Bob and his many, varied, and generous contributions to the this community. I first met him in person in Santa Barbara when we served together on the Board of Trustees of Fielding Graduate University, where we earned doctoral degrees, he as the student and I as the alumni representative. I doubt that his involvement in the Vineyard community diminished during the time he was at FGU (a rigorous, non-residential, and largely self-directed experience for adult learners that requires sustained focus and discipline); rather, it grew to encompass and serve yet another one. All of us, both here and there, have been blessed by your talents and gifts, Bob, and you surely deserve this award! Many thanks!
