VTA Gets $3.8 Million for New Electric Buses

Once the new buses are purchased, 87 per cent of the VTA’s overall fleet will be electric.

The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced Tuesday that the Vineyard Transit Authority has received a $3.8 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to support a transition to electric bus services.

The grant is one of three awarded statewide by the FTA, amounting to nearly $60 million in total funding.

VTA Administrator Angie Gompert said the organization will use the funding to purchase four new electric buses and charging equipment. It will also fund staff training on the technology. Once the new buses are purchased, 87 per cent of the VTA’s overall fleet will be electric.

“We are thankful to the Federal Transit Administration for this award and to MassDOT for their continued financial support of the VTA’s electrification vision,” Ms. Gompert said in a statement.

The other grant recipients are the MBTA and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority.
