Vineyard Resident Wins $1 Million in Jaws Lottery Game

Gecimar Silva, a longtime painter from Tisbury, claimed his prize at the Massachusetts Lottery headquarters in Dorchester Friday, opting to take the one-time lump sum payment of $650,000.

A Martha’s Vineyard Man hit it big this week when he won $1 million in a Jaws-themed lottery game.

Gecimar Silva, a longtime painter from Tisbury, claimed his prize at the Massachusetts Lottery headquarters in Dorchester Friday, opting to take the one-time lump sum payment of $650,000, according to the lottery.

Mr. Silva has lived on the Island for 18 years and bought the Jaws ticket from Depot Market in Edgartown because it was a new scratch ticket and the movie was filmed on the Island. Mr. Silva told lottery officials he hasn’t gone on a vacation in 30 years and he plans to take a trip to Florida with his winnings.

The Edgartown store will get a $10,000 bonus for its sale of the ticket.

The Jaws-themed instant scratch tickets went on sale in March, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the film. People who buy the tickets can also win a trip to the Island, and a chance to participate in a Jaws game show put on by the lottery.

You cant tell me the Mass Lottery didnt rig it to have someone on the Island win one of the Grand Prizes. Good for him though.

1 million dollars? stop right there.....it's 1 million, minus the cut the lottery takes for themselves, which is 350k.....now you have 650,000 before taxes....now take 35% or so out for federal and state tax, and you have around 425,000 left....so...congrats anyway and think about the math and what the state does to you...

Larrry NY for winter

Umm, well not exactly correct to say that the lottery took for themselves. He choose lump sump it says. The total lottery (as all lotteries are) is a pay out of either between 10 to 20 years) With this inflation, that is the big difference on the lump sum payment.
