The ferry line booked more than 25,000 vehicle reservations Wednesday and did not run into any of the technical issues that have plagued opening day for the general public in the past.
It was calm seas for the Steamship Authority Wednesday when the opening of summer vehicle reservations went off without a hitch.

The number of bookings is slightly higher than the previous two years and equates to more than $6.7 million in revenue, according to an SSA news release.
The uneventful opening was a welcome change for Steamship officials and tourists accustomed to opening day glitches.
In an interview with the Gazette, Michelle Fitzgerald said she got on the website shortly after 8 a.m., and breezed through in less than half an hour.
“I was pleasantly surprised today,” said Ms. Fitzgerald, a Wareham resident who has been summering on the Island for years and booked a August vacation Wednesday. “[In the past,] it would freeze up or you’d get booted off. There was none of that this year.”
Opening day for vehicle reservations is something like the Steamship Authority’s Black Friday. Though Islanders get an early crack at vehicle reservations from May through October, tourists line up on opening day to score prized summer weekends.
The crush of customers has caused the website to falter in the past and the ferry line this year implemented a virtual waiting room that managed the number of people allowed onto the website at once.
This created a queue that let people know the approximate wait times before they could enter the site and book a reservation.
This year’s peak wait time of about two hours and fifteen minutes came around 8:40 a.m., when 21,300 people queued up. A Gazette reporter logged on around 8:30 a.m. and the wait time was about two hours.
“It went quite well,” said James Malkin, the Vineyard representative on the Steamship’s board of governors.
An outspoken critic of the Steamship Authority’s information technology systems, Mr. Malkin said he saw no problems Wednesday and the only complaint he heard was about the sometimes long waits for customers.
But with the sheer number of customers looking to come to the Island, he couldn’t see a way around that.
“People will complain about the waiting time, but it’s because everybody gets there at the same time,’ he said. “I don’t know another way [to do it].”
There has been talk about setting different opening dates for different times of the summer, he said, but none seemed appropriate for the travelers who want to get their vacations squared away.
The Steamship Authority was supposed to open the Vineyard’s summer vehicle reservations two weeks ago, but the reservation system struggled when early reservations for Islanders opened up in January. The ferry line conducted an investigation into the issue and found problems with underperforming servers.
Changes were made to the servers and, after tests, the summer vehicle reservations opened for the Nantucket route last week. The SSA said 8,389 transactions were booked, sans glitches and crashes.
That gave Steamship Authority general manager Robert Davis confidence heading into the Vineyard route, which had more than three times the number of reservations on opening day.
“Although delaying the general openings was unfortunate, we ultimately were able to provide a better experience for our customers,” he said last week.
The Vineyard route opening day reservations were just slightly higher than years past. The Steamship Authority processed 24,609 reservations in 2023 and 24,508 reservations in 2022. Nantucket’s reservations were below previous years.

Maybe! MVThe headline is sort of true. If you wanted to go on to SSA website to reload a lifeline card for the 7 am boat you were dumped into the waiting queue for a summer car reservation. Or if you wanted to log in and change an existing reservation you were dumped into the same queue. The system didn’t crash due to volume but you couldn’t really do your regular transactions. It’s good if you wanted to make a summer reservation. Failure if you just needed to do a day to day item.

How does that happen? By the time I was able to schedule my trips, all my preferred times were gobbled up. I would appreciate it if someone would enlighten me on the correct procedure to advance to the front, while still following the SSA rules; so that next year, I may be able to schedule my preferred time.

Me HereI went to the ssa website on my phone a bit before 8 just so I'd know what I was looking at. I then closed that tab and a couple minutes before 8 opened a tab on my computer. The tab on my computer was 14000ish. I later went to see what number I'd get if I opened a tab somewhat later on my phone and was pleasantly surprised to discover that even though I'd closed it tab my browser had nevertheless kept a toe in the door and I was in the lottery with a number around 5000,iirc. My understanding is that everybody who was there before the doors opened went into a pot and were assigned numbers randomly. So if you opened the site somewhat after 8 you were after everyone else who had touched the site before 8.

Anyone who logged on after the 8:00am start time was assigned a queue number in the order they logged on, but after all those people who had been waiting online at 8:00. It would be better next year to log in a few minutes before 8:00am rather than even a couple of seconds after 8:00. The same thing happened to my sister!

as the system obviously di better than expected. However, the SSA still seems like a mismanaged enterprise.
I was in the pre waiting room
GP Condos King of Prussia, PAI was in the pre waiting room at 7:30 AM and waited until 8:30 AM. I was number 12,497. I waited exactly 2 hours and by the time I got into reservations, everything was booked for Aug 11 through Aug 18th. Everything! I am lucky a friend got me a ferry reservation through the Head Start Program. We already have booked the house. I don't know what we would have done if we couldn't get a reservation. It was better going on at 4:00 AM

The SSA seems to suggest that there is no viable technical solution to the influx of users on the day that summer bookings become available, other than to make users queue up for up to two hours. That's demonstrably false: many modern web services are provisioned in the cloud in such a way that the number of servers devoted to the web service can increase to accommodate a spike in user demand, and can shrink when the demand spike has passed (to avoid wasting resources and paying for them when demand is lower). What's more, SSA knows when this demand spike is coming (which is what also allowed them to deploy the queueing mechanism on summer reservation opening day). It's routine to build modern order processing sites that handle many more than 20,000 simultaneous users, and to scale the number of servers in the cloud with demand so that operating expenses match load. SSA should get better technical advice and deploy a reservation system that scales capacity on high-demand days. Then users won't have to wait hours or even minutes to make reservations, even on the day of heaviest demand in the year.

It seems like unnecessarily creating panic sort of like manipulating a stock so it makes a run. By doing away with arbitrary dates to open up reservations will do away with the mad rush.

Sarah Weymouth, MABelieve me, I’m glad this process went smoothly, but I’m not sure I believe that the woman who was interviewed (the article says she logged on after 8am and only waited a 1/2 hour to make reservations). I was in the virtual waiting room before 8 and still waited about 90 minutes to be let in. My assigned number was 7200-something. Assuming what she said is true, looks like the SSA may still have a way to go with transparency and communication about the process.

I afford my house, because I rent it out. that crowd is against rentals....over 300 dollars for a round trip car? that is not going to last much longer. ridiculous rental prices, overrated food and way overpriced food. traffic and weather is awful, remember last summer..
maybe the anti rental crowd, can just get the ferry to reduce service in the summer, and prevent the visitors from coming? Maine, jersey shore and ocean city and the outer banks are cheaper and better vacation destinations these days, so I am told
