West Tisbury will hold a fall special town meeting in November to consider funding a program incentivizing town residents to build affordable housing on their property, along with a series of minor funding articles.

The select board voted Wednesday to schedule the town meeting on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. at the West Tisbury school.

The housing program, being developed by the town’s affordable housing committee, was originally slated to be on the annual town meeting warrant, but the select board pulled the article after determining it was not ready for town meeting floor.

“It’s in really good shape,” said select board member Cynthia Mitchell of the proposed program, which has been revised with help from Martha’s Vineyard Commission housing planner Laura Silber and commission senior planner Bill Veno.

The program aims to encourage West Tisbury residents to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on their property by offering forgivable loans of $25,000 to help with project costs. The warrant article will ask for funding to begin a pilot program funding 10 projects, as well as developing a request for proposals for a program administrator.

In addition to the ADU program, town administrator Jennifer Rand said she plans to include an article asking for funds to supplement the town’s legal budget.

The warrant will remain open until Oct. 10.

Great work West Tisbury. Collaborative and thorough effort by all involved. This is a fine example of a community working together with all their varying perspectives and aiming to achieve a common goal for the greater good. It is inspiring to see. If we keep this up there’s no telling what we can accomplish. Bravo.
