Menemsha has been struggling with limited parking in recent years and there will now be four fewer spaces this summer.
Seven diagonal spaces on North Road between the Galley and Menemsha Market are changing to three parallel spaces. The swap comes at the request of market owner Deborah Packer, who owns the land the parking spots are on, Chilmark select board member Bill Rossi said at last week’s meeting.
The existing spaces are partially on Ms. Packer’s property, he said, but she is now asking they be moved back off it.
“We’re not happy with the situation,” Mr. Rossi said. “It’s registered land, and they own it to the property line. There’s really not a lot we can do.”
Three feet of the current spots are on the property, town administrator Tim Carroll said. If they were to be pushed back the cars would stick too far into North Road, necessitating the switch to parallel spots.
Frank Fenner, co-owner of the Galley, lamented the change.
“It’s just sad to see all the different parking that’s been lost in Menemsha,” he said.
The select board voted to initiate the process of rearranging the spaces at the meeting on Tuesday.

Can the Historic Commission
Harriet Chilmark/West TisburyCan the Historic Commission do anything? Best to keep Menemsha as it has always been.

Just old.
Another example of a town
George Stein OBAnother example of a town lost in ego over practical solutions. No alcohol revenue from permits or sales, God forbid internet access upgrades, parking spots are the big news folks. Emily Litella lives !
