No Clues Yet in Strawberry Theft at Olde Town Gardens

Edgartown police received a walk-in complaint at the station Tuesday afternoon reporting a possible theft of $300 worth of strawberries.

Edgartown police received a walk-in complaint at the station Tuesday afternoon reporting a possible strawberry theft.

According to a police report of the incident, Lynne Daniels, whose family owns the Olde Town Gardens farmstand, located on Road to the Plains in Edgartown, reported that someone had entered her property, broken into her garden and picked roughly six quarts of strawberries on Saturday night. She had estimated the value of the strawberries picked to be about $300.

She added that the property is clearly marked with “No Trespassing” signs and that she was certain the berries had not been eaten by any roaming wildlife.

Ms. Daniels does not have a security camera and did not witness the events firsthand.

To fend off future illicit harvests, Ms. Daniels said she will strengthen defenses around the garden and consider installing a security camera system in the area.

The police have not taken any further action at this time.

Updated to correct name and ownership of Olde Town Gardens.

Name Off-island

On the one hand, that really and truly sucks. On the other hand, my eyes are genuinely popping out of my head at strawberries for $25 a pint!

just a thought mvy

Unfortunately this place isn't what it used to be. We have to lock our cars, lock our homes, and have a security camera in our garden. Just FYI its worth it to have the security cams with no monthly monitoring fee. I got the amazon blink cams (watch for the sale prices) and you'd be amazed at what you see while you're gone. Its also a HUGE help to law enforcement. Fortunately my neighbor had a doorbell cam which identified the perps who were at her front door at 3am last year... obviously with ill intentions until they spotted the cam and ran away before breaking in.

I have nine foot high 1" chickenwire fence and bird netting all over my entire garden, and birds and squirrels still stripped my strawberry patch bare over night. Time to move to even smaller holes in my fence I guess.
