Traffic along Beach Road was being detoured Friday afternoon because the Lagoon Pond drawbridge was stuck in the open position.
Traffic along Beach Road was detoured for hours Friday after the Lagoon Pond drawbridge was stuck in the open position.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced around 5 p.m. that the bridge that connects Oak Bluffs and Tisbury was temporarily closed and officials were investigating the cause. Officials later said there was a problem with a fuse.
Tisbury police warned drivers about the malfunctioning crossing earlier in the afternoon and it was still stuck several hours later. Signs on roads leading into the towns urged people to seek alternative routes.
Police details were in the area to help direct traffic and drivers were told to expect delays.
Oak Bluffs police reported around 9:30 p.m. that the bridge had reopened.
The new drawbridge, which replaced its 1935 predecessor, opened to vehicular traffic in 2015 and the first boat crossed underneath the following year. The 350-foot-long bascule bridge opens and closes by a pivoting weight and cost $43.7 million to build.

Our hospital and the drawbridge were built within a few years of each other.
The new hospital cost about 42 million dollars.
That drawbridge cost 52 million dollars.
Good job getting this fixed.
Tom Engley West TisburyGood job getting this fixed. Must have been stressful for those involved. Police jumped in and had the traffic under control in short order. Main artery for MV Hospital. Great crew run the bridge operation. Earl Barbara and of course Rosemary.
