Oak Bluffs Raises Mooring Prices

The Oak Bluffs harbor is upping its mooring fee to $50 per day for the summer season.

The Oak Bluffs harbor is upping its mooring fee to $50 per day for the summer season.

Last year, boaters could moor in the marina for $20 for just the day, or $50 overnight. But harbor master Emily deBettencourt explained that the two-tier fee system was difficult to track.

Now, the harbor will charge a $50 flat rate regardless of whether boats stay in the harbor overnight.

Ms. deBettencourt initially proposed raising the mooring fee to $40, but select board members pushed for the higher price at its meeting on Tuesday, after learning that the raised rate would still make the Oak Bluffs harbor the cheapest on the Island.

“You’d be lowering the original night fee,” said board member Gail Barmakian. “What goes lower these days?”

Ms. deBettencourt said that she thought the jump would be too steep, but ultimately agreed with the board that the harbor deserves the price increase.

“[The boaters] are here to enjoy our lovely town, and I just don’t think it’s productive for us financially to be lower than our neighbors,” said town administrator Deborah Potter.

Later in the meeting, board member Dion Alley expressed frustration about of the Martha’s Vineyard Marathon that was held last Saturday.

The event brought nearly 1,000 people to the Island. The race course traveled around Edgartown and Katama, and ended in a celebration at Waban Park in Oak Bluffs.

“Next year we’ll need to meet with the marathon folks more to discuss how to better handle this,” he said. “I realize it’s a big event, but parts of it were out of control.”

Spectator Katama

I think this is the first mention I’ve seen in the Gazette about the 2023 MV Marathon, held May 20. It didn’t even rate the OB town column, even though Dion Alley was inconvenienced in some unspecified way. If there really were 1000 off islanders blocking traffic in the name of brutal self-punishment, isn’t that at least as newsworthy as Corey’s promotion?

just a thought edg

When I take a ride through the OB Harbor, it appears to be a common practice to have multiple boats (3) rafted together on one mooring. So unless its a charge per hull vs per mooring...its a great bargain

if you've ever moored in OB, that's one mooring, three boats, three $50 moor fees.

Ok. Every time I go into Oakbluffs with my 25 ft boat I spend 500 with the wife and kids and visitors with restaurants and shopping. At least 6 times a season. This is such a stupid policy and anti business. No more. I am fed up with the ibicels on these committees.

Cape Guy Mashpee

I frequently make the trip from Mashpee to Oak Bluffs in my small (20 ft) boat just to stay a few hours and have a few drinks at Donovan's, lunch at Nancy's, or have our out of town guests visit main street etc. We never minded paying the $9 per person round trip launch fee for the mooring... but to drop around $100 (between the launch and the mooring fee) for a boat with 4 people on it for just an hour or two visit is prohibitive and we'll definitely think twice before heading over (and have spoken to many friends who feel the same way). It seems foolish to me to discourage customers from visiting all of the shops/bars/restaurants with this unnecessary fee. Many people might say, "well, if you have a boat you can afford it." But not everybody who owns a boat is wealthy. And between gas and the launch fee and what we spend on the island it's an expensive visit anyway without taking on an additional $50. This goes beyond expensive to prohibitive. I wonder if that's why I saw so few boats on my visit to Oak Bluffs yesterday (on a beautiful July day).

Lost our day tripper visits. We usuallly come over twice a week for a few hours. Drop $200-300 on food or other items with local businesses. We now go to Vineyard Haven at $20 for 2 hours and lunch/shopping. Today that was $130 total for everything. OB would be $80 just for mooring/ launch. Add lunch and shopping…just more than what we want to spend twice a week in the summer. You’re pricing out your local customers.
