Island Traffic Peaks Near Airport, Data Says

According to the data from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, Edgartown-West Tisbury Road near the Martha’s Vineyard Airport saw the most cars in any single hour last year.

Traffic data collected around the Island in 2022 showed one section of road cementing itself as the busiest stretch of asphalt for the second year in a row.

According to the data from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, which first placed traffic counters at various points on the Island in 2019, Edgartown-West Tisbury Road near the Martha’s Vineyard Airport saw the most cars in any single hour last year.

From 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday Aug. 12, 1,517 vehicles passed the counter near the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse District, between Barnes Road and the entrance to the airport. Put another way, that’s an average of one car passing by every 2.37 seconds.

The data also showed that at least the top 50 busiest hours in 2022 all belonged to that spot.

“The fact that it was repeatedly the airport was a little bit of a surprise,” said Dan Doyle, the special projects planner at the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

The traffic counters were put in place as part of the commission’s transportation improvement plans. The other five traffic counters are located at State Road near the West Tisbury-Chilmark line, State Road just north of Old County Road, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road near the Oak Bluffs town line, Beach Road near Big Bridge and Edgartown-West Tisbury Road near Meshacket Road in Edgartown.

Commission officials previously said that other historically busy intersections, such as the Triangle in Edgartown and Five Corners, were not included because idling traffic can throw off the counters and corrupt the data.

On the whole, the annual daily traffic average across the Island was roughly the same from 2021 to 2022, according to Mr. Doyle. There was a surprising jump in traffic in February 2022, he said, with the daily average traffic up more than eight per cent, or about 370 trips a day.

Predictably, the highest traffic numbers take place in July and August, usually in the early afternoon. The second busiest hour in 2022, according to traffic data, was on Aug. 11, from noon to 1 p.m., with 1,506 vehicles passing the airport.

The highest recording not at that airport counter took place between noon and 1 p.m. on July 30 on State Road near Old County Road, where 1,098 vehicles passed by.

Mr. Doyle didn’t want people to think that there weren’t potentially busier places on the Island, just that these were the highest numbers picked up by the fixed counter stations.

The traffic on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road has caught the attention of Island planners. The Martha’s Vineyard Commission said it was in the process of designing and completing a study to see if there could be any way to make navigating the section near Airport Road and Barnes Road a little easier.

The traffic in the area has not gone unnoticed by people who commute through the area.

Geoff Freeman, director at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport, said the traffic at the entrance road to the terminal is a concern. There have been studies done and alternatives looked at, but there doesn’t seem to be a simple way to improve the situation, he said.

Arriving and departing flights at the airport obviously add to the traffic, Mr. Freeman said, but the airport doesn’t have a say in flight schedules. Flight patterns can change year-to-year, potentially creating more jams.

“We don’t dictate airlines,” Mr. Freeman said. “It’s difficult for airports like ours that are very seasonal.”

But he felt the corridor had become busier, too, because more people are on the Island in general. There can be traffic there, even when there are no flights are coming in.

“There’s just a lot more traffic moving around from what we are seeing,” Mr. Freeman said. “We’re continuing to review and see what we can do.”

First a light at the entrance of the airport. Another entrance/exit at the business park. A round about at the intersection of West Tisbury Rd and Barnes. Done

AM 02539

Might work but i fear the backup at the light could extend all the way back to the round-about, blocking anyone coming off Barnes that wants to head left to edgartown, further backing up Barnes.

A light at the airport would work if they included a left turn lane on the east-bound side of the West Tisbury Rd. Also, can the speed limit just stay 35 mph from the airport to Barnes please? (MassDOT has a weird sense of humor when it comes to speed zoning)

Mr. B Chiimark

Could someone recap the reasons showing why it is so difficult to put in a right turn lane coming out of the airport?

Mr Freeman must not be listening as a simple solution is to add a right turn lane out of the airport. It has been talked about for years by myself and others. Start building it now and it will help. Where is the MVC on this we pay them millions every year to help? We know the numbers and traffic for years now.

Geoff Freeman Edgartown

As part of the Airport Master Plan we studied and looked at several different alternatives. Putting in a right turn lane is the obvious short term solution that we agree with. The main issue that was not reported is the DCR (State Forest) holds an environmental easement that runs along a portion of the airport property at the entrance and also along Barnes Road. In our initial discussions with DCR the response was no changes will be approved. We continue to look at various options that would lesson overall disruption at the entrance road that would not hamper the through traffic on WT-EDG road that is controlled by MaDOT. The Airport currently pays for detail officers to be at that area during peak times. Another alternative that is often brought up is cut through to the Airport Business Park, however a public access road can not be built due to the FAA restriction on aeronautical use only in between the Park and Airport.

More traffic, and all those responsible do nothing. The traffic flow can be greatly improved. Are they waiting till it backs up to Ally’s ? Leaving airport backed up from road to terminal. Give this problem to high school students, and they will do better than those in charge. Ask me. Have at least 5 simple ways to move traffic better. They must not want to move the traffic

If you put in a right turn lane leaving the airport, then a lot of the traffic would be alleviated. Simple and inexpensive solution.

How about having the police department simply looking at the airline arrival schedule during the busy summer and supplying an office at the entrance to keep automobiles flowing? The officer wouldn’t need to be there all the time, but during the busy arrival times of the larger jets arriving.

Geoff Freeman Edgartown

During the peak of the summer we try to in put detail police officers for the main groups of airline arrivals and departures. The additional traffic that has added to some backups is the success of some businesses that are not aviation related in that area.

Why not give the airport some tax breaks if they donate some land for affordable housing,it seems like they have more land than they know what to do with. On say fifteen acres of land they could build a couple hundred affordable apartments.the wastewater system is already there so there shouldnt have to be any septic systems

For more information regarding the airport's work on the entrance road, please refer to mvyairport.com click airport info then click Master Plan and starting on page 61 of the link MVY-FEIREA-2021-05-28-FULL-fig-rev
this is a public document on ALL possible alternatives on all types of projects that may or may not be completed but is required to be studied under FAA regulations.

Geoff is correct - the right turn lane is right there in the plans on p. 61, and the roundabout on p. 62. Perhaps our elected representatives could be encouraged to look into the regulatory obstacles Geoff refers to. Who is (are) the best person(s) to contact?

One of the worst traffic days at this intersection this past Summer was during a runner’s road race event where the traffic had to be stopped for the runner’s to safely pass. The traffic was so bad I missed the OB ferry. Without a viable solution perhaps these events should be on the shoulder season and not during Summer peak.

Agree The Chilmark RR should be moved to Labor Day or later. .. The MV population has grown so much that the event causes a large grid lock UpIsland on a very busy turnover day.. Sadly it's out grown its roots as many Island activities have.. Time to readjust event schedules..

Is it possible to add a left turn only lane for east bound traffic into the airport that would allow cars headed toward Edgartown freer passage?

The West Tisbury Police Department provide details at the Terminal. They do not have any agreement with the Airport or written understanding that a detail will be provided at the Airport exit during peak traffic times during July and August. It is the exception not the rule that a detail directs traffic in and out of the Airport. Not sure how it gets resolved, but it's not in the budget to have an officer available to direct traffic during the summer for 3-4 hours a day.

You're all missing the big picture: we've allowed the island to be over-developed and there is no end in sight.
