All the Movies All Over the Island

It's school break week and that means the Island empties out and activities slow to a trickle.

It’s school break week and that means the Island empties out and activities slow to a trickle. But a perfect pastime for the waning days of February involves sitting alone and together, faces turned toward the big screen. Ample opportunities are out there this week.

The Film Society is getting ready for the Oscars, taking place on March 12, with its annual showing of the nominated short films: live-action, animated and documentary. It’s a rare chance to see all the shorts you always wanted to see but couldn’t find the time or place.

Visit mvfilmsociety.com for showtimes and plot summaries.

The hand jive continues at a screening of Grease on Monday, Feb. 27.

On Friday, Feb. 24 up-Island calls as PathwaysArts presents its Oceans Film series, featuring a trailer, two shorts and a feature film. The feature film is Stay Alive/Music Meets Science in the Caribbean. Let music and science by your guide as you travel to Belize, Costa Rica, Trinidad + Tobago, Miami and Louisiana without ever having to leave the Vineyard. Screenings begin at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, keep the groove going at the West Tisbury Library as local jazz expert Dave Kish, of MVY’s Sunday jazz show, presents Imagine the Sound, a documentary about the avant-garde free jazz movement during the 1960s. Showtime and discussion begins at 3 p.m.

On Monday, do a library hop to Edgartown for a screening of the Spike Lee film BlacKkKlansman at 3 p.m.

Also on Monday, pay tribute to Olivia Newton-John, who died in August, with her 1978 smash hit Grease. The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse presents the film as part of its Monday Night at the Movies series. Showtime is at 6 p.m.
