It was the Katama to the rescue Tuesday on the Vineyard route Tuesday when the Governor had mechanical problems.

Ferry Nantucket Back in Service After Week of Shuffles, Breakdowns

The ferry Nantucket was back in service Friday morning after a week of mechanical breakdowns and shuffling on the Vineyard route.

The ferry Nantucket was back in service Friday morning after a week of mechanical breakdowns and shuffling for the Steamship Authority on the Vineyard route.

Service on the Nantucket was set to resume with the 9:30 trip from Woods Hole, SSA spokesman Sean Driscoll said.

The Nantucket went out on Thursday causing cancellations and service disruptions throughout the day, while a generator issue was being investigated.

Two days earlier, the freight ferry Katama was called into service from Fairhaven Tuesday after the freight ferry Governor went out with unspecified mechancial problems. The ferry had stalled while docking in Woods Hole Tuesday morning, Mr. Driscoll said.

By Thursday the Governor was back in service but the Nantucket was out. The Katama, which had been brought over from Fairhaven to run in place of the Governor, was still running, as routes were shuffled and trip cancellations piled up.

At the end of the day Thursday, the Steamship Authority issued a statement about service changes that would run from Thursday night through Friday morning. On Friday morning the boat line advised travelers to check the SSA website for up-to-date information.

“We thank our customers for their patience and understanding,” the statement issued Thursday said.

Tuesday was also opening day for the Oak Bluffs summer terminal for the 2022 season. Mr. Driscoll said all went smoothly.

“It’s always exciting when Oak Bluffs opens up,” he said. “It was a good day for it. Nice clear, sunny day.”

The rest of the week did not go as smoothly.

Was on the Governor when she stalled coming into the dock, and missed the turn! Captain blew collision alarm horns as we coasted towards the oceanographic docks and ships. He was able to restart the engine and avoid hitting anything, but that was it for the freighter for the day!

So that’s one ‘allision’ and one near miss SSA-WHOI IN PAST WEEK. Wait til the cruise ships start docking at WHOI this summer.

And, yet, Mr. Davis continues to rule the SSA with rave reviews from his board. This is what caused that expensive study a few years ago. The SSA is not providing adequate service. Ask islanders trying to go to the doctor or tourists trying to feed into our economy.

this just isn't funny or acceptable any more. something needs to be done on a higher level about the SSA. it's time for a true change

The fish rots from the head! Please explain how Bob Davis get a stellar performance review? This is just ridiculous.

Time to think about a bridge with reservations. Think outside the ferry.

Hybrid SSA (with a good user interface) and Auto/pedestrian bridge. Passenger trolly from the lots.

Biking across a bridge would be spectacular.

Looks like their preventive maintenance program is coming back to bite them.

It’s like building a really expensive garage for your junk car that keeps breaking down and you can’t afford to fix because you built a really expensive garage.
