The ferry Martha’s Vineyard returned to service Tuesday night after sustaining damage when a semi truck hit her stern door early Sunday morning.
Steamship Authority spokesman Sean Driscoll confirmed Tuesday that the ferry would return to service for the 7:30 p.m. trip from Woods Hole after having been off line for more than two days.
While the Martha’s Vineyard was sidelined, the ferry Gay Head, with limited passenger capacity, subbed in on the Vineyard route.
The ferry was taken to the boat line’s Fairhaven maintenance dock Sunday after the truck incident during the first trip of the day from Vineyard Haven.
Few details have been released about the incident or the extent of damage to the ferry.

Where would the money to
Thomas Hodgson wtWhere would the money to build a bridge come from? You'll need to come up with at least 8 to 12 billion bucks.
How much to build and how
Kenny OBHow much to build and how much for the tolls? And where will the bridge be -- VH? Seems a silly idea without facts.

The incompetence is stunning
Islander ChilmarkThe incompetence is stunning and there is NO WAY it is not coming from the top — it’s how it goes, and sometimes they gotta go. Excuses are good for only so many events, so many instances, so many times. Eventually; you have to face facts: the person running things is not good at what they do. It’s not just bad timing it bad luck or outside forces l. Hopefully the Board of Governors corrects course.
Sadly, the SSA has earned
JayEff EdgartownSadly, the SSA has earned "guilty until proven innocent". There is much wrong, and much right. In the case of the semi hitting the door, why cover up the details? People already assume the fault is with the ferry. There may be good explanations for this and other mishaps, but they only tell us what they want us to hear, and then hope the 48 hour news cycle will push the incident(s) out of mind.
