Longtime Oak Bluffs Summer Resident Dies from Covid-19

<p>Gary A. Jenkins, an entertainment attorney who lived in Scarsdale, N.Y., died March 29 after contracting the virus. Mr. Jenkins had summered on the Vineyard for more than half a century.

A longtime member of the Oak Bluffs summer community has died from complications of Covid-19.

Gary A. Jenkins, an entertainment attorney who lived in Scarsdale, N.Y., died in New York on March 29 after contracting the virus. Mr. Jenkins had summered on the Vineyard for more than half a century. He was 58.

He was of counsel to Pappalardo & Pappalardo, LLP of Scarsdale, according to the law firm’s website. A graduate of Princeton University and Columbia Law School, early in his career he clerked for the Hon. Bernard Fuchs of the Kings County Civil and Supreme Court, and worked as a government housing specialist.

In 1990, he was named general manager emeritus of Uptown/MCA, an urban boutique independent label, where his clients included platinum artists Mary J. Blige, Notorious B.I.G, Jodeci, Guy, the late Heavy D, and Al B.Sure!.

At some point along the way he earned the nickname Alexander the Great.

He was also one of the early mentors to Sean (P.Diddy) Combs, and served as a music supervisor on the film Strictly Business, which featured Oscar winner Halle Berry in her first feature film role.

On March 15, as the coronavirus pandemic was just beginning to unfold on the Vineyard, Mr. Jenkins posted a comment on a story that ran on the Gazette website, as part of a conversation thread about summer residents seeking shelter in their Vineyard homes.

The comment follows:

“As an attorney, I am trained to view both sides of an argument with respect, and to assess the validity and merit of each. As a lifelong summer resident of the island (52 years), I do in fact see merit in both positions expressed on this thread. To those voicers who expressed a concern about an early influx of seasonal residents over burdening the island’s health care system before the increased summer staffing of medical personnel occurs, there is some merit in this position. Similarly, to those seeking to leave the big city and seek social distancing at their summer home on MV where there is literally more room to breathe, it is their absolute right to do so as tax paying property owners. This entire discussion reminds of a Twilight Zone episode I remember where once the street lights began to flicker out of control and the machinery turned off and on by itself for no apparent reason, the once friendly neighbors became suspicious of each other and literally were at each other’s throats. As the aliens behind the chaos said in their epilogue, humans are easily turned from loving, caring creatures into hateful monsters simply by inserting some angst and insecurity into their lives. This is not the time to attack each other; our beloved Island needs to prepare for the coming storm, as the corona virus will surely impact its shores, just as the seasonal residents must make sure we are not carriers of the virus before we return. We must remain neighborly and courteous and continue to love each other in the wake of this terrible scourge; if not, we risk losing our humanity, and the corona virus will be the least of our worries.”

He is survived by his wife Maria and their two sons, his brother Dr. Wallace Jenkins and mother Marie Jenkins.

Gary was a staple in our summer community. Boy, did he know how to get the crowd moving and grooving. He always took time out for others and enjoyed catching up with childhood friends. He will be missed and thought of often. Especially, on the infamous bench at the Inkwell.

Party at Sea Glen!! Gary and I go as far back as I can remember. We both had the same hobby as Vineyard DJ's during the vinyl days when it was an art form before computers took over so now anyone can 'spin' with the push of a button. I still have some of his equipment that he sold me years ago including a pair of 5 foot tall speakers! God bless you and your family Gary.

Gary was the pulse of OB summers from the time he was a tween. We will reflexively look for G posted up in The Island House holding court (half of the people surrounding him- having just met him that night), deejaying in the Box, or on his bench at the 'well- until we become accustomed not to. He was learned, loved, & loyal. I feel sorry for the year rounders & seasonal visitors who did not meet him- you missed something. If things approach any measure of routine by fall, & I host planned live readings of "The Twilight Zone" with the Woods Hole Community Theatre, we will dedicate each episode to G. The ep he referenced is called "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street".

Sobering words to a resident from Nantucket the “sister island”. I also have been critical of the influx of summer people flooding here. Mr. Jenkins words puts a perspective on the issue that I will share...... it must have been a privilege to know him.

RIP Gary.
An old friend from back in the day in NY...and MV. We rolled in NY, and we rolled in MV. From the courts to the clubs. I'll stick with memories at my house by the courts last summer till like 4AM laughing and drinking, and memories of eating fish I just caught at Coops,or a party at the cottages as teens. Rest well my brother.

I will always think of Gary sitting on the bench by town beach/inkwell solo or holding court with friends and a cigar. He always had a kind greeting and perhaps if I tarried a while there was a story. One story he shared with me when he discovered I was Jewish was about his family when he was a child and he moved to suburban Long Island and someone burned a cross on his family's lawn. He shared that his Jewish neighbors were the only ones to stand up against this awful act and make him feel welcomed. He said that experience always stayed with him. He was a true renaissance man. An accomplished attorney, brilliant storyteller, eloquent writer, compassionate person and he could definitely get a joint jumping and fill a dance floor as a DJ. Rest in paradise my friend. You will be missed by many.

I always wanted to visit MV, so for my 60th Birthday that was my desire and a birthday gift to myself. The way you express condolences to your dear friend really touched my heart. I have never met him but as I read the words of refections he was "bigger than life" with a love for people and a kind heart! I look forward to visiting MV one day. Hugz to you and all who fondly knew him! S.I.H.P.

Gary was a friend for over 50 plus years. We went to our first Jets game together along with many other events. HE lived across the road from me on the rock and 15 minutes from me in NY. We battled on the court in the summer and shared many stories about growing up on MV in the summer. If I know G, he would be telling all of us to cherish the moments and enjoy our time with our families and friends. RIP brotha man!!!

Gary “Divine” Jenkins was a classmate of mine at Columbia Law School. He was a desperately kind and considerate person who insisted on making the law school experience an unforgettable one in the greatest city in the world. And oh, how much he would go on about Martha’s Vineyard. Haven’t seen him in a while, but always thought of him warmly as a dear friend. Rest in Divine Peace brother.

OMG! I am so terribly sorry to learn of Gary’s passing. I went to elementary and high school with him. I remember the cross burning incident. Gary’s family put an African American lawn jockey in front of the house to guard the family home. I’m so deeply sorry for the family...I remember Wally and their mother, Marie. Elegant, intelligent and hard-working family. I’ve lost too many friends to this disease. Please wear masks and take precautions. The family will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Gary walked into Whig Hall one September evening in 1980 and asked if there was room on the Princeton Debate Team for a “total amateur.” He went from stage fright and a river of “ums,” “likes” and “you knows” his sophomore fall to becoming one of the country’s most feared college debaters by senior spring. That was 1983. He did a lot of living those next 37 years. I caught up with my dear teammate and friend in mid-March, a few days before his wedding and less than two weeks before his passing. We talked about my family’s incipient purchase of a home in VH and made plans for the spring and summer. They involved what you would expect from Gary: he had people for us to meet, the “best places” he needed to show us, more people we needed to know. And he talked about having me join him at his bench. I hope somebody will show me the bench, and maybe we can have a cigar and swap some stories.
RIP Gary.
