Cribbage Grail

A tale of wonder from the weekly cribbage game.

We play cards once a week
Cribbage is our game
Fifteen two fifteen four
up and down again

I started playin’ long ways back
the barbershop back room
George would fold the desk top down
and put away his broom

Time went by my brothers learnt
how to count with pegs
Our parents Harv and JoAnn played
set ‘em up we’d beg

Mae and Milt my mother’s folks
were steady gamers too
Course Lizzy and the friends we taught
made up our Cribbage Crew

I taught Claudie how to play
soon after we both met
Forty years have pegged away
we’re still dealin’ yet

Even though I must admit
I win more than her
Luck is fickle players know
of that you can be sure

So as we cut for deal last week
when Thanksgiving had been done
Another weekend game at hand
meant more peggin’ fun

We surged around the streets with ease
a close one for most part
I got to Fourth ahead ‘a her
a tight one from the start

To the lucky go the spoils.

She dealt the hand I cut the deck
my heart stopped in my chest
Three fives and Jack were lookin’ back
that right five popped up next

But there it was plain as day
I counted twenty nine
My world had shifted just a bit
am I really still alive

She took a photo of the cards
with my giddy grin
I called my brother Colin up
to flaunt my record win

I wanted to tell all the rest
but most of them are gone
so I’m tellin’ you the best
since Cribbage came along

When I play cards I eat rye bread
It helps to pass the time
But inflation has hit my bakery
They're selling pumperdime
So now I sneak peeks at poetry
With no ace up my sleeve
I love to mix cards and bards
And hear what's dealt by Steve

Priscilla Hjelm Sylvia and I were taught cribbage by our father when we were in 2nd and 3rd grades. I think he wanted us to learn number facts so we would have facility with them. I can remember sitting on the front step of our home in Johnston, VT, playing even as cars and people went by.
Eventually I taught my husband and three children and recently played with my 12 year old grandson. So the game lives on.
Loved this tribute to this wonderful game.

My brother and I learned to play cribbage over 60 years ago from our dear grandma. Played in the military. Revived when I joined the ACC thru a local club. We play weekly. Thank you grandma and Steve.

Been playing with my dad's cousins' family for over 55 years. (4 generations).my Aunt Helen had the only 29 hand I'm aware of. My Uncle Dick gave me a poem entitled "Loser's Lament". Not sure of it's origin. Here it is. Why, Cribbage Master, do you choose, to fill my game with fours and twos. But grant my foe a kinder fate like twenty four and twenty eight? The fives and tens, eight-seven-six, with him they match, with me they mix. The nightmare nighteen's mine to boot. The jack is never the right suit. I pair in pegging just for fun. He triples me and adds a run. For luck an actor "breaks a leg" tonight I think I'll snap a peg. And if that doesn't work, Oh Lord, I think that I will break the board.

Start every morning with 2 cups of coffee and 2 games of cribbage to start the day. If we don't have our games in the morning we will get them in sometime during the day.
