As the new marijuana industry gains traction statewide, two groups with off-Island ties envision opening multiple retail stores on the Island.
As the new marijuana industry gains traction statewide, entrepreneurs with off-Island ties are setting their sights on the Vineyard. Two groups envision opening multiple retail stores on the Island and have identified possible locations for the businesses.
Island businessman Geoff Rose said he is waiting on final state approvals to open his cultivation facility on Dr. Fisher Road and a medical marijuana dispensary on State Road in West Tisbury. Last fall, Mr. Rose entered into a partnership with the mainland cannabis company Acreage Holdings. He said this week that he hopes to eventually open two additional retail marijuana stores on the Island and is in the process of opening another store in Framingham.
At a Tisbury selectmen’s meeting last week, a group with business connections in Williamstown presented plans to open a cannabis store on Mechanic’s street in Vineyard Haven. A spokesman for the group said they hope to open three stores on the Island.
Individual businesses are limited by the state Cannabis Control Commission to three licenses for retail marijuana establishments and three licenses for medical marijuana establishments. No recreational licenses have been granted by the Cannabis Control Commission on the Vineyard yet.
Four Island towns have zoned areas for marijuana businesses. Oak Bluffs, West Tisbury and Tisbury did not limit the number of retail marijuana stores that could open in those areas. In Edgartown, the number of retail marijuana licenses is limited in relationship to the number of liquor store licenses issued.
Last spring, Mr. Rose considered a retail space in the Woodland Center commercial complex in Tisbury for an adult-use cannabis store, but business owners in the shopping center voiced concerns ranging from parking issues to the prospective establishment’s proximity to a children’s dance studio. Mr. Rose said he took the concerns to heart.
“I am looking at other retail locations in Vineyard Haven as well as other towns,” he said. “The location that I originally chose, to the best interests of everyone, I decided not to move forward with.”
As for his relationship with cannabis giant Acreage Holdings, Mr. Rose said the company is financing his endeavors and he remains the sole shareholder of his business, Patient Centric of Martha’s Vineyard. He said he had received a loan from Acreage Holdings and entered into a management agreement.
“My intention was to try to fund this with local money, local loans, but it became very apparent that the cost to operate was far greater than my ability to generate loans from local individuals, so I started the effort to look for other lenders,” Mr. Rose said. “Acreage came to me. I did not go to Acreage. They sought me out.”
Acreage Holdings is set to be acquired by the Canadian company Canopy Growth, pending federal legalization of marijuana sales in the United States.
Mr. Rose said his dispensary and cultivation facility for medical marijuana in West Tisbury are both complete, and he is awaiting a final signoff from the Cannabis Control Commission to begin operations.
Meanwhile, last week Main Street Medicinals pitched a retail marijuana store to Tisbury selectmen. The group includes Boston businessman Noah Eisendrath and Island business owner Nicholas Catt. Main Street Medicinals has a consulting agreement with the off-Island company Silver Therapeutics.
Silver Therapeutics co-founder Joshua Ferranto said Main Street Medicinals had signed a purchase and sale agreement to buy a warehouse at 65 Mechanic’s street in Vineyard Haven for cannabis cultivation and sales. The long-term plan is to open three retail stores, Mr. Ferranto said, adding that multiple stores are needed to justify that expense of cultivating the marijuana on-Island. Marijuana cannot legally be transported across federal waters.
“We’re actively looking at another location on the Island,” he said. “Because you can’t move product off the Island, and we have to go through the expense of building out a cultivation facility, if you’re going to do that, it makes sense to have three retail dispensaries on the Island.”

Why would five retail stores
Christine VHWhy would five retail stores be necessary on this island where its already VERY easy to buy pot? And the law allows residents to grow their own. And if Edgartown allows as many stores as they have liquor stores thats easily another five for a total of ten shops? Wow........man.....like thats allot a......herb......
I do not use cannabis. A few
S. E. Cabana West TisburyI do not use cannabis. A few friends on the island grow their own plants now, and seem delighted to be able to do so. And they, and others will likely continue to do so, so who are the customers for all these supposed shops? Summer visitors - a 3 month deal? People trying to mitigate the pain of chronic lyme disease? High school kids? Yuck. The year round population is small around 16,000 or so and yet there are so many AA groups here: http://aaonmv.org/12step/meeting-schedule/
And we've already had a spike in opiate use: https://www.wnpr.org/post/trouble-paradise-opiate-use-spikes-marthas-vi…

Do we need to ad more opportunities for suffering and misery to this small population of people by making this so available that our kids get more exposure? I could understand a medical cannabis shop, but a growing facility in a warehouse that can only supply the island and a plethora of retail shops? Are the towns not coordinating? Is there a lack of understanding that this is one place not isolated individual communities, and plans for such things need to take into account the impact on the whole island, not a single town or comparision with the number of liquor stores? Insanity.
Just what this island doesn't
charlie callahan so boston/edgartownJust what this island doesn't need, more easily obtainable dope and it is dope. I grew up in So Boston and every junkie I knew, and I knew a lot of them, all started by smoking weed and it was on to the hard stuff for a lot of them and a lot of them are dead. Anyone who says it can't lead to the hardstuff is either an idiot or in a dream world.
and a new parking & traffic
Edgartownian Edgartownand a new parking & traffic concern. also a worry about another form of "addiction". So one store at least will have a foreign connection, Canada; interesting financial support.
I cannot read this article
Resident EdgartownI cannot read this article without absolute horror!! These people from Williamstown, Geoff Rose, etc are so despicable in their thinking and their quest to make m-o-n-e-y is beyond comprehension. Five or more dispensaries on the island? It started out with one by Rose. Now he’s teaming with others to expand their request for more? And, not one mention of being a “medical” dispensary. The Vineyard has enough problems with opioids, alcohol, and all kinds of other drugs. Are the towns so desperate to make money? Where are the protesting voices? Those concerned about our children? Our schools? It’s so sad and confounding!
Agree....Stop the madness

My heart goes out to people
Carol Fligor EdgartownMy heart goes out to people who really need medical marijuana, but my heart also goes out
to people who get started for recreational reasons and then become addicted. The Vineyard
is about to be inundated with not one or two places to buy this "stuff" but one, two or more
places in EACH OF OUR TOWNS...Think about it.
The shops off island have
David BThe shops off island have long lines outside their doors of young people waiting for hours to get drugs, whoops.. I mean medications. Do you really want that traffic on the island?
It is a weed. Anyone who can
Marty Milner TallahasseeIt is a weed. Anyone who can grow a tomato can grow it. Once the seeds become available the laws will change to accomodate reality and the "industry" will vanish. Legitimate FDA CBD drug formulations will be available from pharmacies and "dispensaries". Don't make long term plans for the tax revenue flow. It will vanish overnight.
I am appalled by this, as
jeanD chilmarkI am appalled by this, as with the casino in Aquina, it is only about MONEY. Last winter, we were on a bus here, and several people in their teens got on to keep warm. The were all completely drugged out and could barely walk.It left a really sad impression on me, and this is before any marijuana dispensers.....Is this what we want Martha's Vineyard to become?
Exactly how does a pot
Chris Egan West TisburyExactly how does a pot business legally start their operations when they can't bring seed or plants to the island?
Very bad move allowing this
AJS Montauk NYVery bad move allowing this activity on MV. I see MV becoming another San Francisco.
What a catastrophe.
Sara Piazza EdgartownWhat a catastrophe.
So sad. What will become of
Diane EdgartownSo sad. What will become of our youth? Marijuana is a gate way drug, ask any doctor. We are so worried about opioid, as we should be, yet we allow marijuana to be sold legally. I hear the argument from some well educated people that it is no dangerous then alcohol. In my humble opinion there are a lot of people that can’t handle that drug. Let’s check the police report. So let’s just get high one way or another. Pick your poison. I agree with the medical Marijuana to an extent. I fought serious cancer without either opioid or marijuana but with a lot of diet and yoga. It can be done. In the meantime, Pray because the media is brainwashing and the drugs are flowing. Keep your children busy, sports, theatre, whatever and keep an eagle eye. God Bless America.
Please don't bring this to
A.D. WashashorePlease don't bring this to the Island.
I can only howl with laughter
Roddy seasonal visitorI can only howl with laughter when I think that that conservative island of Nantucket has already opened a recreational outlet, and yet the proud "progressives" of MV can't get out of their own way to make it happen. Wow!!
