<p>A 21-year-old Edgartown man was medically evacuated from the Island Sunday evening with a serious head injury after he rolled off the roof of a car, police said.
A 21-year-old Edgartown man was medically evacuated from the Island Sunday evening with a serious head injury after he rolled off the roof of a car, police said. Edgartown police chief Bruce McNamee said the man was being driven home from the beach by two young women and had reportedly climbed onto the roof of the vehicle, a 2006 Volkswagen Passat.
“We believe he was lying flat on the roof of the car,” the chief said.
The operator and passenger of the vehicle yelled for him to come down, but he did not, according to police. When the operator stopped the car, the man rolled off the front, sustaining a head injury that left him in critical condition, police said.
The incident occurred Sunday at about 5 p.m. on Hotchkiss Lane and Meetinghouse Way. Edgartown police and fire/EMS responded. The injured man was transported by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
The man remained in critical condition as of Monday, police said.
The operator of the vehicle was cited for transporting passengers with a junior license and negligent operation.
Tisbury police also responded to an accident over the weekend that involved three vehicles and sent five people to the hospital, police chief Mark Saloio told the Gazette. A 34-year-old West Tisbury man was reportedly traveling toward West Tisbury on State Road near Scottish Bakehouse when he veered across the center line and collided with an oncoming vehicle. A third vehicle then collided with the back of that car.
The operator of the vehicle was charged with OUI, negligent operation and marked lanes violation, the police chief said.
In Chilmark, police responded to the town’s first moped accident of the season. Chilmark chief Jonathan Klarén said a 27-year-old woman from San Diego moved closer to the shoulder of State Road near the entrance of Clam Point Cove Road and reportedly lost control of the moped. She went to the hospital with bruises and abrasions, but no serious injuries, Chief Klarén said.

Two mornings in a row , on an early morning walk near Waban Park with my granddaughters , a young woman was speeding by us and blew through a stop sign. Then a Coca Cola truck on another side street completely ignored a stop sign. Most disturbing of all was a car going much too fast coming down Circuit as people waited to cross at a cross walk. After not stopping at the cross walk, he acceleratd and sped up even more as he continued seemingly out of control!! It's hard to feel safe anymore when drivers don't follow the rules of the road putting everyone around them in danger.

T Bone Oak BluffsI have to agree. Islanders and tourists alike blow through many of the stop signs in OB. I wish the police department would give a bit more focus on watching some of the more egregious stop sign abuses. Park a police SUV around some sign areas, instead of clustering them at the police station.
