Six Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School seniors will receive $580,000 in college scholarships from MVYouth, the community fund announced today.
The scholarship winners are JP Alves, who will attend University of San Diego; Sam Cranston, who will attend University of Vermont; Andres Garcia, who will attend Cornell University; Louise McDonald, who will attend Trinity College; Jo Orr, who will attend Wagner College; and Emma Searle, who will attend Boston College.
The scholarships offer last-dollar funding to students who lack sufficient funds to attend their school of choice. The winners were narrowed down from a field of 40 applicants.
MVYouth was established in April 2014 by Daniel Stanton and Jim Swartz, both seasonal residents of Martha’s Vineyard. The organization currently has the support of 70 founders who have each pledged $25,000 per year for four years. In 2019, MVYouth will disburse $1.9 million between its two programs: expansion grants and scholarships.
In February, the fund awarded $750,000 in expansion grants to three Island non-profits: Vineyard Family Tennis, Camp Jabberwocky and the MV Boys & Girls Club.
The next expansion grant deadline is in October 2019. The next scholarship deadline is in January 2020.

DanWhile the income is there- please invest in a trust and give scholarships equal to the interest/dividend paid. This way the funding mechanism for the organization never runs out.
