Vineyard Photographer Peter Simon Dies at 71

The iconic Vineyard photographer whose pictures of people spanned more than half a century, died Sunday night at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Peter Simon, the iconic Martha’s Vineyard photographer whose pictures of people both famous and ordinary, political protests, rock concerts and Island landscapes spanned more than half a century, died Sunday night at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

He was 71 and had been battling lung cancer for some time.

Beginning in the 1960s and running until the time of his death, his prolific photographic career included rock and roll portraits, the civil rights era, hippie heyday, sports, Jamaica and its reggae stars. He had published numerous books, including On the Vineyard I, II and III, and a yearly calendar. His last book, To Everything There is a Season, was published in 2017 and was a retrospective of his life’s work with more than 700 photographs.

He was a reggae music aficionado and for many years hosted a weekly radio show on WMVY. He produced his own record labels, including the Vineyard Sound volumes that featured compilations of well-known singer-songwriters such as Richie Havens, Jonathan Edwards, Maynard Silva, Johnny Hoy, Susan Tedeschi and his sister Carly Simon.

A longtime year-round resident of Chilmark, Peter was a familiar and ubiquitous presence on the Island, where he would wander about with his camera, often barefoot in all but the coldest months of the year. Lucy Vincent Beach was a favorite summer haunt.

Peter began working for the Gazette in 1969, and over the next five decades contributed thousands of pictures to the weekly newspaper. He never tired of the thrill of having his picture on the front page or editorial page. He was a photojournalist first, and his broad record of work included all the traditional Vineyard events, from the Chilmark Road Race to annual town meetings.

Born in 1947, he grew up summering on the Vineyard and was the son and youngest child of Richard and Andrea Simon, progressives in their era who had a profound influence on him. His father was the founder of the publishing company Simon and Schuster, and was also was an amateur photographer who encouraged Peter’s work.

When Richard Simon died of a heart attack in 1960, Peter inherited his Leica camera.

He dedicated his last book to his father.

In an interview with the Gazette about the book, he said: “My father, before he died, said son, save every negative you’ve ever taken. So I did. I never throw anything out because I listened to him.”

He is survived by his wife Ronni Simon, their son Willie Simon and his sisters Carly, Lucy and Joanna Simon.

Arrangements are incomplete — a full obituary will follow.

In the late 80s when i was a fledgling photographer/videographer peter got me my first big video wedding gig! He also included my band in all three "vineyard sound" cds. over decades he was consistently helpful to me as a fellow artist. Definitely a "rare bird", Peter always had an inner warmth a youthful quality and an amazing and enviable work ethic. thanks from a fellow photographer. i'll miss him.

My thoughts exactly, especially when I saw him the other night. Though he was known for his photos, I thought his radio show was a real gem. After reading his coverage of grooverfest, I thought it's great that Peter remembers the way the island once well, and that we were all lucky someone was keeping that light alive. Our community will be far less colorful with his passing, and that's a damn shame. Peace to you, Peter, and condolences to his family.

Kathy Eckert Charleston,SC

My exact first thought and what I typed to my brother when I sent him the announcement. Prayers to he family as you grieve his passing.

Shocked and saddened to learn of Peter's death. Last summer we had a long conversation about mortality, love, and beauty. He gave no hint of this illness, but he always valued youth. My condolences to his family from his extended family in Vermont.

So sad to hear of Peter's death. He was full of energy and optimism this summer celebrating with his long time friends the 50th anniversary of the Packer Corners commune in Vermont. Such a loss.

Although Peter’s father told him to save all his negatives, he was an amazingly positive person.
As the captain of the West Tisbury Sunday morning softball game Peter spread his encouraging and positive spirit far and wide.
We will miss him..

Peter and I grew up together in Riverdale (the Bronx) New York. His father, Richard, was an avid amateur photographer and I think Peter got the photo bug from him. Our parents were good friends and my dad, who published the local weekly, The Riverdale Press, gave Peter his first photo assignments when he was still in high school. My memory may be failing me, but I recall him speeding to assignments in his dad's Cadillac convertible. Even then, Peter was soft-spoken, self-effacing and extremely talented. He also had the great strength of character and exemplary judgement to be a life-long Mets fan!

I am so saddened by this news. Peter was one of a kind—tremendously talented, empathic, and both sensitive and strong willed. He was a friend who enriched my life over several decades. He was my classmate at BU in the tumultuous late 60s, and years later, the photographer at our wedding at the little chapel on Christantown Road. And years after that, my golfing buddy (barefoot of course) when I lived on The Vineyard. Over all those years, Peter and Ronni
became one of the Island’s truly iconic couples.
I will miss him.

Peter took pictures celebrating our 25th. anniversary in 2011. We had arranged ahead; however, instructions were just give me a call when your ready. We met on Philbin Beach when the light was perfect. It was as if we’d known him forever. What a great evening we will always remember. He said, just send me a check when you return to Illinois. I’ll mail your products. We are very saddened to know such a kind man has passed. Glad we knew him for a short time. Our sympathy to his family.

How lucky to see his presentation and slides and backstories on his newest book at VH library this summer. He alluded to rare form of cancer but indicated he was on meds that kept it in remission. Often misunderstood, he was a very kind compassionate and talented man. Several years ago my car broke down and he picked me up and asked so what’s your story? I said oh my car broke down but on way to OB to an event. He said no what are you all about. I thought it odd but he was had a natural curiosity about everything.

God bless our good friend Peter Simon. My wife Tanya and I were honored when Peter agreed to be the official photographer at our daughter Ayanna’s wedding in 2000. His photos from the wedding ceremony at the Federated Church to the reception under a tent near Sengekontacket Pond to a party at Lola’s remain family keepsakes despite our daughter’s divorce. A classic Vineyard wedding made even better by Peter Simon. We will miss Peter. Rest In Peace Peter Simon.

Sad to hear of Peter's death this morning. I am the raggedy blond 4 year old in the commune photos. I haven't seen Peter in decades, as I missed the 50th reunion this past Summer. Though Peter's warmth, and prevailing calm are what I remember the most. Love to his family, and his dear friends-far and wide.

Peter was a relentless photographer, but he also was a reggae music evangelist who brought reggae to the Vineyard years and years ago. I can remember seeing The Harder They Come thanks to him at an informal gathering in Vineyard Haven in the early 70s, and when I started Island magazine back in the mid-80s Peter was there to offer reggae photos from Jamaica.I saw him on the sidewalk just a few days ago, and we nodded to each other as we passed. What a loss for the Vineyard! And how easily we take for granted some of our most vital contributors.

Peter photographed my son's Bar Mitzvah at the MVHC in 1980...he was so young and so kind and so talented. He also photographed my daughter and son-in-law who had been married 3 weeks prior...they treasured Peter's photo above all that their wedding photographer took. His beautiful photoghaphy has captured the Vineyard we all love. May his memory be for a blessing.

We saw Peter at the Barnraisers' Ball, where he took our picture, and again last Sunday night at Grooverfest, where Peter was bounding around the room recording the event to raise money for another beloved Island local in need of our support to help fight his own battle with cancer. He stopped to tell me how much he liked the picture he had taken of me and my wife, Joanne. Peter seemed to have been everywhere and know everyone, all the while remaining humble, respectful, and truly a gentle soul. As iconic as they come. Peace be with you, Peter.

Truly the end of an era. Peter was our wedding photographer in 1995, vividly capturing our journey from inside the Federated Church, to our horse and carriage ride to the Harborview Hotel, where he made my beautiful bride feel like a super-model, twirling around in the field of daisies, the Edgartown Lighthouse over her shoulder. For decades, my mom (Marian Mohr) would have Peter sign our Vineyard Calendar Christmas presents, or his latest Vineyard books which are still proudly displayed on our coffee tables. Peter was a wonderful soul who will be deeply missed. Love to all the Simons.

I got to know him via his love of Reggae music, his Reggae Bloodlines radio show on WBRU Providence and WGBH Boston among other stations. I still listen to tapes I made of those shows. One of his first stations was the old WCAS Cambridge 740am. An excerpt [http://www.740wcas.com/smp3/psimon791229.mp3]. Met him once in Providence when he was spinning reggae at the old Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in the mid 80's. He was a real fan of the music & his enthusiasm was infectious.
