Clarence A. (Trip) Barnes 3rd, the irrepressible, story-telling Island trucker known to Islanders near and far, will receive the prestigious Creative Living Award this year, the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard announced on Tuesday.
“A true Vineyard institution, Trip has proclaimed his allegiance to the Island in huge lettering on the sides of his many moving vehicles, which have been in every state in the union, Canada and Mexico,” Permanent Endowment executive director Emily Bramhall said in a press release.
Funded by a gift from the estate of Ruth J. Bogan, the Creative Living award recognizes Islanders who have enriched the quality of life on the Island.
Ms. Bogan “could fix anything, cope with any emergency, and she met every problem as a challenge to be confronted with courage and intelligence. This description could well have been written about Trip,” Ms. Bramhall said.
Mr. Barnes, who recently sold his longtime company Barnes Moving and Storage, is an elected member of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission and a well-known auctioneer at various Island charity events throughout the year. He also was a founding member of Vineyard House, the Island’s only sober living facility.
His business is in Vineyard Haven, his home in West Tisbury, both places surrounded by an array of vintage vehicles in varying states of repair. “I never throw anything away,” he told the Gazette in a 2015 interview.
The award will be presented at a ceremony on Monday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m. the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. All are welcome.
