There was a good deal of confusion at the Edgartown Post Office Tuesday morning, where the service windows did not open until after 11:15 a.m. The retail window hours are posted as 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Customers were unable to mail packages or buy stamps. Many found their post office boxes still unfilled.
“We apologize to our Edgartown customers for any inconvenience caused by the delayed opening of our office on Tuesday,” postal service spokesperson Stephen Doherty said in an email. “We are putting steps in place to make sure that this type of miscommunication doesn’t repeat itself going forward.”
Customers were visibly confused and displeased. Jane Chittick of Edgartown was waiting in line for the windows to open just after 11 a.m.
“This is a post office. Why would you expect mail?” she asked ironically.
Edgartown postmaster Lisa Panaccione temporarily opened a side window to distribute packages for pick up. She declined to comment on the issues aside from repeating, “We’re short-staffed.”
At about 11:20 a.m., Ms. Panaccione opened all the windows to begin helping customers. When Ms. Chittick asked about the delay, Ms. Panaccione said she could not elaborate because the issue was a “personnel matter.”

When you're dealing with
Bucks EdgartownWhen you're dealing with government, union employees there is absolutely no recourse. If the USPS were a private business it would be bankrupt. But so would Amtrak, Chevrolet and hundreds of other crony-capitalist companies that suck at the teat of this out of scale leviathan. Why does anyone think that government can do ANYTHING effectively and efficiently when it can't even get it's "workers" to show up on time? We all have had countless nightmares dealing with Edgartown Post Office and yet nothing changes. Call the government, call the unions, good luck!

I am amazed! As a retired
John Anderson Warwick RI 02889I am amazed! As a retired USPS employee who worked as a window clerk and reitired as Manager, Express Mail, what is so difficult in opening the window to serve our customers? You are the Postmaster; step up!
Faulty service just in time
PeregrineFaulty service just in time for income tax time -- are we dealing with union problems here? Or just slackers in general?
I think this place has me
Ken Edg.I think this place has me listed as dead. My mail keeps going back to the sender. Been that way for 2 months. Wherever it gets sorted there is a glitch in the machine and no one can fix it.
