Three top police executives from off-Island are finalists in the search for a new Edgartown police chief.
Robert DeFlaminis Jr., Bruce R. McNamee, and Brian Lauzon will be interviewed Monday by the Edgartown selectmen. The interviews will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the town hall and are open to the public.
Selectmen will meet at 4 p.m. for their weekly meeting, at which they may name the town’s new police chief.
Mr. DeFlaminis is the assistant chief of police for the Massachusetts Port Authority in Boston. Mr. Lauzon is a lieutenant-executive officer at the Natick police department. Mr. McNamee is the captain of the administration division of the Plymouth police department. He was also a finalist in the search for a Chilmark police chief last year.
The three finalists were the top performers in an all-day assessment held Monday on the Island, selectman and board chairman Arthur Smadbeck said.
The candidates will meet Monday morning with members of the police department.
The closely-watched process of choosing a new chief began in early December, when former chief David Rossi filed for medical disability after he had a heart attack. Lieut. Chris Dolby has been serving as acting chief.
Integrity Testing LLC, a consulting company, has assisted with the search along with a community panel including the former fire chief, school principal, council on aging director and human resources director.
The group chose nine semi-finalists from a large field of applicants. Six were selected to take a day-long assessment test on Monday this week. One dropped out shortly before the test, Mr. Smadbeck said.
He said the testing process was grueling. “This was no nonsense,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this. This is the way you do it.”
He also said he was impressed by the quality of the applicants. “Really high-powered, highly qualified people,” he said. “I’ve been told that the resumes were just out of the park.”

We need to stop the revolving
Bob EdgartownWe need to stop the revolving door of top public officials taking a job on the island and leaving in 1-3 years because of housing or other issues. The salary or something needs to be done if they leave early there is a penalty.
Typically officers don't have
JohnTypically officers don't have a lot of time left before retirement when they get Chief positions
I absolutely agree with you
Ali EdgartownI absolutely agree with you Bob.
We have many qualified people right in the department, I'm enraged they would do this
I hope that the new chief
John Mort EdgartownI hope that the new chief will quickly address the petty “divisions” amongst the existing police force and appropriately get everyone working as a unified team. The politics within have to stop in order to have a world class organization. It’s ridiculous that they exist today.
I agree with you, John Mort.
Ginger EdgartownI agree with you, John Mort. A well unified station will go a long way toward protecting and serving our community more efficiently and with better quality.
I am, of course, disappointed
Gail Gardner EdgartownI am, of course, disappointed that no island candidate made it to the top three. For that matter, I'm also disappointed that the female candidate didn't make the top three. I also have concerns that the interviews with the selectmen are in the middle of the workday, making it hard for people to attend and that one of the three candidates previously was hired for a chief position in a small community and quit after one day. Finally, how can the selectmen interview these candidates between 1 and 4 pm and announce the new chief at the selectmen's meeting at 4? Isn't discussion after the interviews useful? Or is it not needed because, as I suggested at a previous meeting, they had already made their choice before the process started?
I'm sorry, but there is more
Jack R EdgartownI'm sorry, but there is more than enough qualified officers on EPD to promote a chief from within. This is a legit conspiracy among the Edgartown Mafia. What does some random cop from some random town know about being the police chief in Edgartown? Nothing! What a slap in the face to the Edgartown officers. When this new chief decides to retire, will there be another process like this current one or will that not be needed because they are connected to the Edgartown Mafia?
I think this is the correct
T.C. EdgartownI think this is the correct path to go. Because it’s clear to me the last Chief did not do a good job internally and he was from inside as was the one before him. So maybe someone from the outside who does not know the “politics” of EDPD could be helpful.
This is about getting the right person to lead a great group of people.
Just because someone who has held a position in an organization for 10-20 years makes them the lead roll....
This mentality unfortunately exists in Government/Muncipality type jobs
I'm glad to see the process
deshandra brown EdgI'm glad to see the process in place to pick the candidate best qualified and experienced to lead the department. If local candidates who possessed the experience and qualification chose to not apply and or accept the job, that would be an obvious indicator that someone from the outside needs to 'straighten things out' if divisions do exist. And if they do, the department members should have worked it out amongst themselves so that there would be a guaranteed path to promotion from within. If you don't like an outsider coming in, then learn to get along so when the new Chief retires, one of the department members can step up to the plate and take the reins.
This is a sorry result from
Tom MassachusettsThis is a sorry result from such a promise of highly talented candidates. What we have here are three candidates with enough time to retire, not one of them a chief of police. Didn't the officers in Edgartown ask for someone who knew how to be a chief to come straighten out the mess? This group must have some political connections, or they were picked because they will be one contract and done. They certainly don't have the resumes promised. A lieutenant, an assistant chief of a transit group and a captain of a city?
