Veterans Day is today. Due to unusually cold temperatures, an indoor ceremony will be held at the Oak Bluffs School gymnasium. The event begins at 11 a.m.
By long tradition, the installation at the Avenue of the Flags at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven began at 7:30 this morning on a cold, blustery day with bright sunshine. The flags will remain in place until 3 p.m.
Banks and post offices are closed in honor of the national holiday.

I wish I were on the Island
Karen Seasonal Oak BuffsI wish I were on the Island to see the flags in the cemetery. It is a beautiful thing that this is done. God Bless the veterans for their service, and God Bless the USA!

Robert Skydell ChilmarkMy father, Marvin Skydell was a radio telegraph operator on Liberty Ships during WW2. He enlisted in the Merchant Marine when he was 17 (which required his mother's permission)and served as part of the treacherous North Atlantic Convoy for most of the war. The cumbersome ships were unarmed and an incredible number were torpedoed by German U-boats. Few people realize that on a percentage basis the Merchant Marine lost more men than any branch of the armed forces and it wasn't until sometime in the 1980's that my father and his fellow seamen received veteran's status.
