MVC Begins Review of Edgartown Stop & Shop Expansion

A public hearing about the proposed expansion of the Edgartown Stop & Shop store is slated to begin Thursday before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

A public hearing about the proposed expansion of the Edgartown Stop & Shop store is slated to begin Thursday before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

The project will be reviewed as development of regional impact. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Edgartown library.

Stop & Shop’s proposal calls for constructing a 15,952-square foot addition to the existing 25,000-square-foot supermarket on Upper Main street. An Edgartown National Bank branch next to the Stop & Shop would be demolished and reconstructed elsewhere on the property. The project includes reconfiguring the existing parking lot, adding parking spaces, and changing the location of one of the driveways exiting the property.

Plans also include renovating the existing store, which was built in 1965 as an A&P supermarket. The company plans to move the pharmacy now located at the Triangle to inside the store and add improvements including more check-out stations.

The company’s plans first came before the Edgartown planning board nearly two years ago. In a slightly changed process, review began at the town level with several hearings before the planning board. The project was sent to the commission in January of this year.

During public hearings before the planning board, residents and abutters raised concerns about noise and traffic in the Upper Main street area, a notoriously congested spot during summer months.

If permits are in place, construction could begin in the spring of 2018 with a goal of opening in 2019, according to documents filed with the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The store would remain open during construction.

Lets Hope The MVC gets this one right and pass it and move on we need this, long over due. Lets not get greedy and be like Town Of Tisbury looking for everything under the sun....ie... affordable housing, cash, new school etc.....and then Stop and Shop walks and there left with the biggest eye sore on the Island.

How about scrapping the existing site in favor of a state of the art S&S out by the Airport park? More centrally located and room to breathe.

Kevin M OB

Nice of you to spend Stop & Shop's money. Do you really think S&S wants the Airport Commission as their landlord? Especially after the Airport Commission shut down the Airport Mobil in a lease dispute? Why would S&S want to give up land they own and control to be beholden to a crappy landlord? And if it was such a great idea don't you think the corporate folks at S&S would be pursuing that option? Always easy to spend someone else's money.

WhatWhatWhat? OB

First, the Airport Business Park limits the retail at the park. Second, No one lives near the Airport. Not Convenient to walk. Not Convenient to drive. Not Convenient to take the bus. Not Convenient to take a bicycle. Great idea!

How about the 10 people that want to move the S&S to the airport move their homes to the airport instead? They obviously think it's easy to do. The S&S is the unofficial meeting place for Edgartown residents. Riding your bike or walking to the store is a nice part of living in town.
Besides, some of the worst traffic is at Barnes and West Tiz road...this would make that far worse.

Matt, I couldn't agree more!!! Tisbury selectman planning board all to blame.... They wanted more and more and Stop and Shop did walk.... now they have the worst eye sore on the Island.... The first thing we see as we arrive on this great Island. Bad leadership and greed...
We need a voice like Commissioners Lenny Jason and James Joyce to bring common sense to this and get a new market in Edgartown.
To the planning board in Edgartown I urge you to as well pass this don't ask for millions of dollars in affordable housing and rebuild the Town Hall new Fire Truck new Schools etc.... We need a new Grocery Store not politics.

I agree with your comments. The Town Of Tisbury has a history of doing this..... I loved the Stop Shop plan in VH, it wasn't perfect but look at what we have now? It was unfortunate that Cronig's made the expansion difficult with the purchase of the corner house.... it was self interest there not affordable housing.....My family can't afford Cronigs Market prices..but we can afford to Stop&Shop, Thank you Selectman now we have a Stop Shop that is the size of a convenience store......While Cronigs keeps adding on.....No problem with there expansion a few years back or the Solar panel garage project.

We know have the Boch Park going on. Mr. Boch wants to do the right thing and put a Park where this other eye sore has sat for 20 + years.....Just watch what happens here. I would not be suprised if Boch also walks from the table.... and I wouldn't blame hime...Then we can look at another eye sore for another 20 years while some Selectman want to "play poker" with Mr. Boch good luck with that....

I agree with Matt. The Tisbury politicians and Cronig's made a mess of the situation and are now paying for it - such a shame and a blight on the island. It is embarrassing. Edgartown and the MVC please learn from their mistakes and make us proud!

I agree-move it to the airport! More room, parking, easier access and get it out of the main traffic area!!! Win/win for everyone!! It may finallly be a pleasure to grocery shop!!! Is it just us normal peeps that shop all the time that feel this way???

WashAbhored Edgartown

I can tell you that normal "peeps" like our family have no interest in driving to the airport to go shopping. We love where the Edgartown S&S is. We always see friends, it's close to the school and other businesses and we can walk/ride our bike there.
The traffic at Barnes/West Tisbury is every bit as bad as the Triangle.
If you want good shopping that you can drive to I'd suggest the Market Basket in Sagamore...they have lots of parking.

At no time, nor at any point, has Barnes and the West Tisbury Road intersected !
That is AIRPORT ROAD !
Not Barnes, Barnes ends at the roundabout !
I have even heard the Comm Center make that mistake when giving directions to police and emergency responders.

A move to the Airport would be horrible!! Can't walk it, can't bike it, can't make a quick trip to it.
Can you imagine the excessive speeds that will occur when someone needs to just grab a quick few things? !!
Also, the West Tisbury road is now one of the few roads left in the summer where, on most days, a little escape from the traffic insanity still exists!
Lets not turn that into the next over crowed, jammed up speed way.
The good thing about traffic at the Stop in Shop is, that for just a brief period, it slows things down some and slightly tempers the insanity that has become our summer !
