Cheryl B. Stark, the iconic Vineyard artisan and co-founder of CB Stark jewelry store on Main street Vineyard Haven, died Jan. 2 at her home in West Tisbury. She had recently celebrated both her 70th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the store.

Cheryl Stark came of age as an artist during the counter-culture era on the Vineyard in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She later built a thriving year-round business enterprise with clients around the world, with her longtime wife and business partner Margery Meltzer.

Born and raised in Scarsdale, N.Y., she first came to the Vineyard in 1966 when she was 19 and a student at the Museum School in Boston. She had taken a course in jewelry making and was drawn to silversmithing.“I thought I had found my thing. It was great,” she said in a September 2016 interview in the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine. She saw a notice on the bulletin board at the school inviting artists to Martha’s Vineyard.

“I took the bus down, met Sydna White’s mother who told me she had an Island Craft Center,” she recalled. “People were making things from clay taken at Gay Head. Rose Treat had her seaweed art.”

Ms. Stark worked in the craft center tucked behind the old Linden tree on Main street Vineyard Haven. She made a silver peace sign and later a bunch of grapes, presaging the charms that would one day become the bread and butter of a thriving CB Stark enterprise.

After working a few summers on the Vineyard, she returned for good in 1969, opening her first store in a garage on Water street in Vineyard Haven, where the Black Dog Bakery is today.

She met Ms. Meltzer, a musician and poet with a degree in philosophy, on the Island in 1972. They were inseparable, as a couple and as business partners. CB Stark jewelers has been an anchor business on Main street Vineyard Haven for decades.

“You can’t make a living year-round on the Vineyard, but we have made the choice to keep our employees employed,” Ms. Stark said in the magazine interview.

In late May the store hosted a small celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of CB Stark with cake and champagne. Ms. Stark turned 70 on the same day.

A celebration of her life is being planned for the spring, and a full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Gazette.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Infusion Services, P.O. Box 1477, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.

Arrangements are under the care of Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.

Every April Cheryl gave me a medallion that she'd carried the year before and I passed it down to another the next year. I loved this tradition and I will miss her grin and big hugs! Godspeed and may flights of angels sing you to your rest my friend! Deepest condolences to Margie!

Martha's Vineyard is my heart home and it was a customary, comforting and enchanting ritual to visit CB Stark every vacation to the Island. There was always a purchase of beautiful jewelry that keeps me happy throughout the year until I return. Ms. Stark was a gifted jeweler and with her partner created a very successful business. I'm sure she will be very much missed. My sincere condolences to her personal and business family.

Every summer for the past 20+ years I have looked forward to wandering amongst the creations at C.B. Stark. Cheryl's store became a tradition for me, one that I have passed on to my teenaged daughter. We both wear the memories of our summers through the pieces collected over time. I like to believe when an artist creates a piece, a small part of his/her essence is embedded in the art. If that is indeed the case, Cheryl will live on amongst those of us who have been touched by her gift. May comfort be with her family and friends.

I am so sad to hear about the passing of Cheryl. I have known her for over 20+ years. CB Stark was always my first stop off the ferry. She and Sara always greeted us with open arms and her friendly manner was well received by myself and my family.

I too have a full charm bracelet a trip to MV was not complete without a charm or two coming home with me and I found a solitary shard of green beach glass on Menemsha beach which was turned into a neck lace which has not left my neck in 15 years you will always be remembered.

Seeing this article in the Gazette and reading the tender comments reminds me that I went to High School with Cheryl and I very much regret not knowing her in her later years. I missed a wonderful friendship, it seems. Please know, Margery, that you are in my thoughts.

My thoughts go out to you Margery. I was so saddened to hear of Cheryl's passing. I am still married to Beth now for 28 years perhaps on the strength of the beautiful wedding rings you made for us.

Overwhelmed with shock and sadness. I met Cheryl back in 1994. I worked with her brother Leslie in NY and he introduced us. I had moved to the Vineyard that summer in hopes of making a life there. Cheryl was kind and gracious. I still have and often wear the lovely cross I bought that day along with many other Vineyard charms purchased through the years. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her wife Margie and everyone she loved. Heaven has a new angel designing gems from moonbeams. May she rest in peace.

Extraordinarily talented artist and business women. Her legacy will never be forgotten. Truly an icon, well beyond New England.

Very sad news. Although I have been shopping at her exquisite jewelry store on the Vineyard for many years, I only had the chance to spend some time with Cheryl Barbara in recent years. She was an interesting and talented woman. One of the pendants she designed, I wear every day. We shared thoughts and stories about the Vineyard, our families, and civil rights. She spoke of Margery with love and devotion.

The Vineyard has lost another iconic figure in Cheryl B. Stark, a talented & spirited woman who always had a twinkle in her eyes & a smile to share with whoever she met, weather it was in her store(s), now a Vineyard institution, on the street, or at any of the events - a benefit, local entertainment or otherwise - she & companion Marge attended. Needless to say, like so many who have expressed their feelings above, I was stunned to learn of Cheryl's passing. I have been, and will continue to be a patron of her remarkably striking pieces of jewelry. Sincere condolences to Marge, the C.B. Stark family, and the innumerable friends that were touched by her talent, jewelry, & presence.

I have never been fortunate to visit Martha's Vineyard but from all I've heard from Cheryl and Margie,it's a magical place and a must on my trip list. I met Cheryl and Margie on Long Boat Key where I spend the winter. We became friends over the bridge table and I was fascinated by their business acumen as well as their life story. Two amazing women, warm and friendly and so much fun. I miss our Sunday afternoons together and hope Margie returns to LBK some day. My sincere condolences to Margie and all her family and friends.

Cheryl gave me my first job, in 1969, the year she opened her store. I was 14 years old and her only employee. She taught me how to work silver, and a mentorship was born which grew into friendship as I got older. She housesat our family home in Vineyard Haven for a few winters, and as a teenager I would visit her occasionally, marveling at and reveling in the wild parties and wildly colorful cast of characters parading through. Cheryl knew how to have a good time! I loved her dearly, though our lives went in different directions and we saw each other all too rarely in recent years. She is a beautiful and integral part of the fabric of the island and will be for eternity. Cheryl, you'll be missed and loved forever.

Cheryl was the first cool person I had ever met at the ripe old age of 8. I loved going to CB Stark, talking to Cheryl and "hanging out". She was fun, welcoming and hip. Over the decades, Cheryl and I became great friends. She loved the view from our deck on Harbor View Lane and we would have plenty of conversations which covered the gamut. Cheryl was a one of a kind, generous, loving, smart and fun friend. Her store supplied our family with jewelry for decades and will continue to do so. Margie and Cheryl were wonderful role models as a couple and as business women. We went through a lot together and I will always miss and love her. My heart goes out to Margie at such a difficult time of transition.

Cheryl has touched so many hearts and adorned our bodies with unique treasures and keepsakes from the Island. Think for a moment just how many people treasure wearing her designs, and pass these pieces down to descendants. Thank you Cheryl. A beautifully gifted soul will be missed by so many.

My family and I summered on the Vineyard from 1974-2011, and I would never leave the island before stopping in at CB Stark to see her latest designs. Many of my pendants came from her store, including the ring my husband and I picked out for our 25th anniversary and my 50th birthday. It is a cluster of grapes with a small ruby. It never leaves my finger! I am so saddened... a wonderful craftsperson.... May she be designing for the angels above.

My heart hurts, but the heart stones you and Margery have shared with me over many winter seasons in your secret garden on LBK remain as treasure of my heart. You both could escape to this place for peace and tranquillity color, warmth, and gulf water sunsets and many friends.
Your spirit was a fighter and brave as the brightest star in the evening sky. Namaste Cherly
